He’s in pain, both mental and physical. He’s torn between the man who’s always had his back and the man who he can’t let die. He could leave but he can’t risk it; there’s one dead body in here already and in the case of a double murder charge, Dwayne won’t have his back.
“You coming?” Dwayne asks, turning back to look at Colby in the aftermath of the crash.
“I will… I’ll be right behind you.” Colby waits until Dwayne leaves before he rushes over to Don as fast as he can to assess the damage. There’s one single good thing Colby finds out: Don’s alive. There’s a metal strut protruding out of Don’s leg and Colby carefully and methodically works to get it out, using all of the concentration he can muster to help him. Don can only watch helplessly, fearful of the possibility of Colby dropping him.
Don passes out before the rest come and Colby has to tell Megan and David with as much suppressed anger as he can keep down that Don’s only unconscious, that he’ll be alright as long as they listen to him, that this wasn’t a hostage situation.
The medics take over and Colby finds it difficult to leave Don. He’s scared now, scared of what could happen to him now that there’s nothing holding them back from shooting and killing him. He’s cuffed by David as soon as he stumbles outside and is lead to a SWAT baby-sitter.
“How’s Don?” Colby asks, feeling as if he should be the first to know.
“That’s what I want to know.” David walks away after that, leaving Colby with the approaching medic and SWAT guy as his only company.
“Where does it hurt?” the medic asks and Colby can’t help but grimace, something he doesn’t do often. He doesn’t know where to start.
