Baby Girl (The Unavoidable Regrets Remix)

Leaving her was the hardest thing that he ever did.

She had won him over in the womb, cementing her hold at birth when she grabbed his pinky with her tiny hand. Sure, she had screamed for attention at ungodly hours of the morning like most infants, but Molly was his baby girl. It may have been the sleep deprivation, but she seemed to shine in his mind.

He taught her how to play chess before she even started school. Like any good instructor, he went easy on her without being obvious about it, teaching her the importance of strategies that would maximize the various strengths of the pieces. Once she learned that the tenacious advances of the pawns could outflank the great power of the queen, he had to play with his full strength; and even that was not enough after a while (though she always did her best to only win by a point or two). A mind like hers had to be destined for something great

But as much as he wanted to stay to see that day, he had responsibilities that he couldn’t put off any longer. He longed to explain to Molly and Sarah why he had to leave, but knew it was simply not an option. Any knowledge of his activities would put their lives in danger.

So he left his most prized possession in Molly’s small hands and trusted her to the future.
