He stops in for coffee, and sees what he knows no one was meant to: Nigel Fenway, lost in thought, looking close to peace. His face expressionless, eyes closed.
And, irrationally, Lucas wants nothing more than to see that man’s eyes.
Like the wish that never should have been granted, Nigel’s eyes fly open. He looks at Lucas with silent questions that know nothing of detachment.
Lucas tenses, skittish under the scrutiny. Wanting to run away-wanting to run forward. Humming with tension, like metal caught in perfect suspension between two magnets. He’s trapped.
