So. . . am I understanding correctly that MCU does not include Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, and Daredevil for this exchange? And thus works including characters from the movies and characters from the television shows are considered crossovers and ineligible for counting purposes?
(I mean, I qualify even if I take out my Melinda/Natasha fic and the couple AoS fics, but it's a decision that might affect other people.)
Umbrella fandoms: There are a fairly high number of umbrella fandoms that incorporate a range of other fandoms or verses. MCU is probably the most obvious, though it's far from the only one. If the umbrella fandom is the only one you qualify in, you have to check it off. However, if you qualify in a subfandom, and that's the only one you want to be matched on, you can obviously check the subfandom. Remember, though, that you can't include crossovers in your story counts, so if you've got 6 stories over 100 words all set in the Thor universe, but the seventh is a Thor and Captain America crossover, than you'd have to sign up under MCU, not Thor.
So it sounds like you could qualify as MCU OR Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter
I don't see why I couldn't qualify in both? For my personal case it would actually be the subfandom "Iron Man (Movies)" and the umbrella fandom "Marvel Cinematic Universe," but I have something like ten qualifying fics using Iron Man characters and another twelve qualifying fics using characters from elsewhere in the MCU

Actual Mod Answer: We... may have forgotten about AoS, Agent Carter, and the Netflix Daredevil when we were getting the signup form ready to go. We're very sorry

Heh. Whedon has been throwing around some sour grapes because his vision is being disrespected. Basically, he wanted things to be all about his vision as a creator--the kind of control he got on, say, Buffy or Firefly--and that's just not possible in a universe like the MCU. Add that to a large subset of fans being vocally angry about certain plot points in AoU, and Whedon has flounced off and deleted his twitter.
He's been replaced for all future MCU projects, so he can't speak for anything about the future of the MCU. And everything else, past and present, says the TV shows are explicitly a part of the universe.
TBH, my concern isn't Joss's vision, so much as what's practical for remix to run. I think there are probably a fair number of people who love the films and know very little about the tv shows. And since you can now sign up for all fandoms separately, we'd rather just keep the shows out of MCU, at least for this year. I can make a post clarifying, though, so it's at least not something people are unsure of.
Not in remix, it hasn't. It ran last year with the exact same definition of MCU that's currently on the signup form. Too many people know the movies but don't watch the TV shows. Separating it out means people who don't know it all don't end up with source material they can't work with.
It's a little arbitrary, but remix has always needed a certain amount of that to minimise the number of people who find their matches don't actually match them.
I'm definitely not saying that's the definition in remix; I'm saying it's the definition overall, in canon, and in fandom. I read when I signed up (like 10 minutes after opening) but totally missed that you were excluding AOS, which is where I first ever needed the MCU tag, though I did notice you didn't explicitly exclude X-Men movie stuff from MCU though that is definitely not included per canon definitions.
I'm really glad I got in an extra drabble and signed up for Agents of SHIELD since I did not realize remix diverged from standard in this. It makes sense, but no, it was not obvious at all.
There's never been any question that the X-Men movies weren't part of MCU, so we've never had a reason to explicitly state those were excluded.
As Laura said before, we kept the wording exactly the same as we had it last year. We'd hoped that would avoid confusion, but our hopes are so rarely realized. I'm sorry for the mix up!
