1. Last night was my first attempt of cooking a low-fat, low cholesterol meal from a Weight Watcher's recipe book.
How did it turn out? Not so good. The recipe was Chicken Stuffed with Orange-Tarragon Rice.
Tony explained it this way: You cooked it correctly and it tastes how it is supposed to taste but it doesn't taste like anything we would normally eat. And I have to agree.
Down here in the south, our main ingredients for almost any meal is butter/oil, animal fat from red meat turned into gravy, rice, some kind of side vegetable drenched in butter or cheese, and seasonings like red pepper, black pepper, and lots of salt.
And because we are so used to the taste of fat, it is hard for our tongues to adjust to food without it. So the idea behind the Weight Watchers recipes is that the cook use uncommon ingredients to add the flavor that is normally provided by fat.
For example, the one I made last night called for raisins, orange juice, tarragon, and white wine. All of these flavors made a far-from-bland sauce but it was like nothing we had ever eaten.
Tony, out of kindness, finished his.....but moved the raisins to the edge of his plate. I couldn't finish mine, but that isn't unusual because when I cook, I lose my appetite after a few bites. Devon liked it but also moved the raisins.
Layla ate it with fervor...lol. Of course, she eats any and everything.
So I'm not giving up. I know that I have to get out of my food comfort zone in order to do this but it's hard. And we are really down-home kind of people. I mean honestly, who the fuck puts raisins in their rice? Maybe some gourmet people or something but not us and not anyone born and raised in the south.
2. I turn 27 today. I'm happy, sad, and pissed off. I am no closer to being finished with school as I was at 26 and it feels like I will be a housewife the rest of my life. Or I will work stupid entry level jobs while my kids go to school. So I'm sad and pissed off about that.
But I'm happy about the beautiful bouquet I got from my best friend. The flowers smell so good and are bright and sunny.
