3x06 On Open Wings

Tru Davies stares straight ahead with her lips pursed tightly together. Her expression is a mixture of being blank and a deep rooted annoyance that one cannot pinpoint with just looking at her. Finally she sighs softly and turns to the person sitting on her left in the taxi she is in. Lindsay, her best friend who she suddenly finds so hard to talk to, looks at her with an equally impassive expression.

"Linds...." Tru starts letting another mangled sigh escape her lips.

"Just don’t Tru," Lindsay says finally turning her head to meet Tru’s eyes. She now looks tired and worn down as if she had just run through a marathon race, but otherwise looks the same as when she was last seen. "I’ve got a long flight ahead of me and the last thing I need is to feel guilt tripped..."

"I’m not guilt-tripping you!" Tru protests quickly, cutting her off. "I’m apologizing for the shitty vacation you had to endure. Look Lindsay, I really am sorry and I promise the next time you visit things will be better…"

"The next time I visit?" Lindsay scoffs. "I don’t even know if there will be a next time."

When she sees Tru’s visible hurt Lindsay hangs her head slightly and gives her a weak smile. "Between you and school work, you and your ex, and Harrison....." she shakes her head, "This trip has been a nightmare. I thought if I came here then..."

"You really miss him, don’t you?" Tru asks sympathetically, giving her friend’s forearm a sharp squeeze.

"Every day," Lindsay breathes out, the evidence of tears already beginning to form in her eyes. She quickly brushes them away with her dormant hand.

"I know the feeling," Tru says quietly, breaking her head away from Lindsay to stare straight ahead once more.

"Right," Lindsay says, having heard the story again and again since the time she arrived. "Jensen..."

"He just left," Tru says shaking her head in almost disbelief, "I mean I knew things were going badly but... he left. Me, school...maybe even his career…"

"At least he didn’t leave you for someone two years younger than you," Lindsay says bitterly. She takes a few more swipes at her eyes, knowing at any moment the dam might just break. "I was even stupid enough to think that Harrison would be..." She trails off and looks down at her hands.

"Single?"

Lindsay nods her head.

"Avery… she’s a good friend..."

"Is that supposed to make me feel better? Especially with those...stupid mind games he played with me during lunch?" Lindsay says, now letting a solitary tear roll down the side of her face. "There was nothing for me back there, Randall’s gone... here? Harrison’s gone. What do I have?"

Tru lets out a very audible gulp, blinking back her own tears threatening to get loose, before she whispers, "I am so sorry..."

Lindsay opens her mouth to say something, but whatever the words are is lost on her lips as the taxi comes to a rolling stop just outside the airport entrance. "Wonderful," she says sarcastically, reaching into her purse and withdrawing a compact. "We’re here," she says beginning to dab the tears under her eyes away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru and Lindsay walk in silence as they near the woman taking up plane tickets at the terminal. Both look equally stressed and the tension hanging in the air can be felt on all sides. Lindsay is no doubt thinking of what slim possibilities lay in front of her. The bad trip she has just experienced doesn’t bode well with her and the fact that both Harrison and Randall are now out of reach only adds to her frustration.

Tru, on the other hand, has her mind still upon Jensen. She can’t help but wonder why he left, and so suddenly. Had things really turned that sour between them? Bringing him back... it all started with that. She hated to admit it, but she couldn’t but wonder if Jack was right all along. Was Jensen really meant to be back?

"So..." Tru says, attempting to tear her mind away from painful thoughts. "Maybe next time you’ll stay more than two days," she says lightly.

The joke is lost on Lindsay and she merely nods in response. "Maybe..."

"Tru, wait up...." a voice suddenly calls from behind them.

Both women turn around and Lindsay visibly grimaces at whose waving at them to stop. Harrison is already a bit out of breath as he runs over to them and Avery, who is trailing behind him, doesn’t look very pleased.

"What do you want, Harrison?" Lindsay asks dryly, thankful that her make-up has covered any traces of tears.

"Oh c’mon..." Harrison says finally reaching Tru and Lindsay. "Can’t I see you off? We didn’t get to talk all that much." Avery lets out a small squeak at that, clearly taking Harrison’s soft spoken words as flirtation towards his ex. "I wanted to give my goodbyes..."

"Yeah?" Lindsay asks, a smile starting to form at the corners of her lips as she looks into Harrison’s eyes.

"Yeah," Harrison says softly as he runs a hand from Lindsay’s shoulder down to her arm.

"I missed you..." Avery walks up next to them fuming, but her anger is completely lost on Harrison. "When do you think you’ll be coming back?"

"I thought you were going to say goodbye, not give her an invitation to visit!" Avery says angrily.

"Uh... we were talking." Lindsay snarls as she gives Avery a look.

"Like you were just talking when you were putting the moves on him..." Avery retorts, giving Lindsay a cold glare.

Harrison looks between the two and then runs a hand behind his neck. "I was just saying goodbye... it’s not like that..."

"Like what, Harrison?" Lindsay asks, crossing her arms over her chest as she looks at him with some resentment.

"Yeah, what is it then?" Avery agrees, crossing her own arms.

Harrison looks at the two angry women and merely chuckles nervously in response.

Lindsay shakes her head in clear disgust just as the overhead announcement begins to address on boarding passengers. "My flight’s leaving... goodbye Harrison." Lindsay turns to Tru briefly and forces a smile. Tru leans forward and hugs Lindsay, after a moment Lindsay hugs her back.

“See ya Tru…”

“Bye Linds… I know things are gonna work out for you. Trust me.” They break the hug and a moment of silence immediately follows.

“Thanks Tru…” Over the PA, the announcer announces the final boarding call. “I gotta go, bye…” Lindsay looks to Avery briefly and holds back glaring at her. “Nice to meet you…”

Avery rolls her eyes as she responds “Right…” Lindsay takes hold of her bags and rushes away, taking one last look at each of her friends as she goes.

As the three friends watch their departing friend leave, Harrison turns to his girl. "Ave..." Harrison starts, deciding to work on his girlfriend’s sour mood.

"Save it," Avery snaps, "I’m going home. Call a cab for your ride..." With that she turns on her heels and walks off, not looking back once.

Harrison looks back at Tru, looking completely shocked at what has just taken place. Tru merely shakes her head in response and mutters, "Smooth move, Casanova..."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I just don’t get it," Harrison says as he presses his back against the large airport window Tru is staring into. "I mean, how did I let things get so wrong?"

Tru sighs and looks over at her brother through an analytical eye. "You really don’t know?"

"No....well okay, maybe there might have been some flirting going on, but I was just trying to cheer Lindsay up." Harrison says, breaking away from the window to face Tru.

"Come on Hare, how would you feel if Avery was being all flirty with one of her exes right in front of you?" Tru repeats in mild indignation.

"I’ve never even met the guy," Harrison says.

"So?" Tru says in disbelief, "Maybe you should think about what it would be like, and then maybe you can fix things with Avery."

Harrison stares at the dirty floor for a few seconds, seeming to consider Tru’s words. “Well, could you talk to Avery for me? Maybe help me patch things up.”

“No way Harry, this is something you gotta do for yourself.”

“Come on Tru, you help people all the time. Just because it’s not a rewind day doesn’t mean you can’t help people out… especially your bro.”

Tru rolls her eyes, "That’s beside the point..." She goes to say something else, but her eyes tick through the window once more. "Look... her plane’s taking off...."

"How much do you think long distance phone bills would be?" Harrison asks off-hand.

Tru rolls her eyes again and opens her mouth to speak, but instead of the words she were to utter, a sharp cry escapes her lips instead when the plane Lindsay was on blows up right in front of them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Oh God!" Tru screams as she still tries to process what has just happened. She tries to make a run for the terminal but Harrison grabs her roughly around the middle. "Let me go....what the hell are you doing?" Tru shrieks, trying to break free and run.

"Tru, calm down," Harrison says, visibly shaken and upset himself, but trying to keep a clear enough head for his sister’s trauma. "J-just......we’ve gotta..."

"Gotta what?" Tru cries, finally pushing him away completely as the plane comes barreling down to the ground and crashes, "The plane.... Lindsay... oh.... oh God...."

"Lindsay," Harrison repeats, making a grab for his sister once more before he suddenly yells and slams his fist against the glass. As his hand hits he begins letting tiny sobs escape his body before he’s leaned against the glass crying.

Tru says nothing, her face wrenched up on so much emotion and pain. Just behind Harrison she can still see the plane, Lindsay’s plane. The smoke is billowing out from the wings and small fires are spread out in various places. Even with her calling, even though she deals with death on an almost weekly basis she never experienced this much pain and shock. Her eyes tick from her brother, to the plane and then back again as he sobs with his forehead pressed to the glass.

Then in a matter of seconds, her feet are flying against the floor as she runs towards the terminal. She’s already breathing heavily and is drenched in a cold sweat. But the hope that she might be able to reach her friend in time outweighed any of that. She runs down the length of the terminal, almost getting towards the doors that led to the open space the burning plane was on, but she is soon met with hard hands to her shoulders.

"Let me go!" She yells at the large security guard that holds her tightly.

"Ma’am, you’re not allowed through here," He says trying to drag her away despite her struggles.

"My friend was in there!" Tru yells like a mad cat that’s fighting bath time. "I have to get to her!"

"You need to calm down, is what you need to do," The guard says, already pushing her back towards the opposite end of terminal. Away from her friend, away from where she needs to be. "They’re already getting the med staff out there and as soon as we know anything we’ll let..."

"I’m a doctor," Tru says suddenly, her dark eyes never leaving the glass doorway that leads to the airstrip.

"A doctor?" The security asks in skepticism, with a raised eyebrow to match.

"Yes, a doctor, I work at the city morgue…" Tru repeats, trying to calm herself so that she’s coherent enough to talk to him, but finds herself shaking from head to foot anyway. "I could help... y-you need all the people you can get."

The security guard looks at her with what could be construed as sympathy and then steps away, waving her in. He then presses a button on the radio attached to his shoulder and says into it, "Expect a twenty something female. Doctor, allowed clearance...."

"Thank you," Tru mutters to the air as she hurries through the doors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru’s expression is still grim as she clamors past officers and the medical staff trying to assess the situation. She holds a hand to her mouth when she sees bodies already strewn about, knowing full well that these people are beyond hope. She steps past the bodies until she sees a lone officer, shaking his head at the destruction of it all.

"What happened?" Tru asks, her voice coming out squeaky, like air being forced through a bottle. She should remember to calm herself and breath, but at the moment she can only think about getting to Lindsay.

The officer throws his hands in the air. "We don’t know," he says tiredly, "Are you a doctor?" When Tru nods he points a little ways inside the plane itself. "There’s some staff over there....more...bodies." He looks upset himself, as if not even understanding the words he’s saying himself. "They could use some assistance."

Tru nods and hurries in that direction, instantly finding a group of doctors hunched around various people, checking for any signs of life. It doesn’t look good. She gulps and heads over, stopping in her tracks when she sees the nearest body.

"Oh god..." She whispers as she drops to her knees and pulls Lindsay’s body up into her lap. She looks down at her front, putting a hand to her neck to check her pulse. But with Lindsay’s blank expression and her still chest, Tru doesn’t need to check to tell that she’s gone. Lindsay’s clothes are tattered and slightly charred, black grease splattered randomly over her body.

"No... oh god no…" Tru moans, holding her dead friend closer. "Please....."

Tru feels something stiffen underneath her embrace and she pulls away, confusion etched about her features. She’s startled only slightly to find Lindsay’s eyes staring wide at her, more lively yet still very much deceased.

"Help me," Lindsay murmurs.

In an instant, more bodies begin to stir and sit up slightly to face Tru. Some are children, some are women, men, elderly, all nameless victims. And there are tons of them. Tru looks around her at the dozens of dead bodies. Together in union they begin to cry out to her.

"Save me...."

"Please...."

"I need you..."

"Help us...."

Tru has no time to bask in her shock and confusion before the day rewinds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru bolts upright in bed, a cold sweat glistening on her face.

"Lindsay," she breathes, her voice constricts tightly as bile rises in her throat and she barely manages to gasp for some much needed oxygen. "Oh my God…"

The shrill ringing of the phone brings a horrified Tru out of her brief reverie.

"Harry!" she shrieks into the phone, not even waiting for a response on the other end of the line.

"You know it’s still a little freaky when you do that," the all-too familiar chirpy male voice says. "What’s the matter, sis? You sound like you've just fielded a call from Ghostbusters or something."

"Wrong time to play mind games, Harry," Tru says, her breathing finally evening out just enough so that she can speak clearly. "I need your help today."

“Yeah well, you don’t usually sound this stressed out when you wanna just go for coffee. What’s up?”

"Something is going to go wrong with Lindsay’s flight out tonight. I’m gonna need your help to keep that from happening."

There’s a pause.

"But, if it’s one of those days then…" Tru cuts him off abruptly.

“Meet me at the coffee shop in 30 minutes and I’ll tell you everything.” There’s a brief pause before Harrison answers.

“I’m already on it. See ya in 30.” Tru hangs up the phone and throws the cordless on her bed before going to get dressed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harrison and Tru are sitting in a booth talking. "Yesterday I went with Linds to the airport. Suffice to say we didn’t exactly end things on the right foot, so let’s just say I better make up for it today or else I owe her one hell of a vacation the next time she comes here. Anyway, then you and Ave came by because you claimed you didn’t get to say goodbye to her properly and she left to get on her plane. Everything was fine until…" Tru’s voice breaks for a moment as she struggles to pull herself together.

"Until what, Tru?" Harrison asks, concern lacing his voice.

"We both saw the plane blow up. Right in front of us, Harry! Right in front of us!" Tru sounds exasperated and worn though today’s battle has yet to be won.

"But Lindsay…" Harrison begins to protest, suddenly losing it as his voice trails off in quiet contemplation.

"She asked for my help yesterday, thank god…" Tru continues. "But so did all of the other passengers on that plane. And since there’s no way I can be in two places at once, I need you to help me."

"I’ve got your back, sis. Anything you need."

"Good. I’m gonna be meeting Lindsay at the mall later to go shopping like we planned yesterday after she got in. Lindsay asked to have lunch with you and my new friend Avery who’ll be at the mall too while we were shopping so you should be hearing from us in an hour or two. You gotta handle this one delicately Harry, Lindsay still has feelings for you and I think it’s one of the reasons she came back. If you’re not careful you could mess things up with her AND Avery. Watch yourself…”

Harrison raises his hands and leans back in surrender “All right, all right, I got it. I’ll try not to screw things up. Besides, I’ve got you to watch out for me in case I’m about to do anything stupid.” He smiles at his sister.

“Right, anyway, I gotta go. I’ll see you in a little while,” Tru gets up but remembers something before she leaves “Oh, and Harry? Go easy on the flirting today…"

Tru leaves Harrison at the coffee shop and heads out to her shopping date with Lindsay. Losing a plane full of passengers, especially when one of them was her best friend, was definitely not on her top list of comforts right now. She didn’t care how many times Jack would try and thwart her every move. The cards had been dealt and the flipside of the coin was heads up. Fate was preparing to fight a losing battle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stepping off the elevator, Jack Harper makes his way into Richard’s office. The receptionist acknowledges him with a nod as he walks in.

"Let me guess, she’s doing the heroic thing again today?" Richard Davies says without even looking up to acknowledge the other man’s sudden presence.

"’Fraid so," Jack replies. "But I think we’re all in for a lot more than we bargained for."

"How so?" Richard questions his disciple, eyeing him with an eerily calm indifference; his face is void of any discreet trace of discernable emotion.

"Well, from what I saw it looked like Tru knows the victim personally, I saw her modeling some clothes for her. Then there was what looked like two love birds holding hands, I think it was Harrison and Tru’s friend… Avery. Then I saw what looked like an airport terminal, I think there was a plane ticket with the flight number 740, the inside of an airplane, a lot of shaking and then I heard a very loud explosion." Jack pauses for a moment as if to turn something quickly over in his mind. "Seems like a plane went down and Tru’s friend Lindsay was one of the passengers. I happen to know for a fact that Lindsay’s going back to Europe today."

"Oh, please don’t tell me you’re gonna have all that fun without me," a seductively sweet voice says from behind Jack in the doorway.

"Wasn’t planning on it, but if you insist…" Jack jokes back at Carrie Allen who walks in and stands next to Jack, her arms folded across her chest.

Jack quickly fills Carrie in on the day’s itinerary.

Richard sits up straight against the black leather backing of his chair, folding his hands together whilst looking up at Jack and Carrie.

"Well, Jack, what’s your strategy today?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"City Morgue…"

"Davis, it’s Tru," Tru says almost hurriedly into her cell.

"Oh, hi, Tru," Davis says, "Hey, aren’t you with Lindsay today? I thought she was leaving later tonight."

"Well, let’s just say she won’t be going anywhere near the airport if I have anything to do with it."

"Oh my God, Tru is it…" Tru cuts him off quickly.

"Yeah, it’s a rewind day," she says, "And if I don’t stop Lindsay’s plane from taking off tonight, the whole plane’s gonna blow up. I already saw it blow up once in front of me, Davis. I can’t let this happen again."

Davis is at a loss for words. "My God, Tru. I’m so sorry. S-so is there anything I can do to help?"

"Not yet, Davis. All I know is that I not only have to save Lindsay, but I have to save a whole plane full of passengers. They all asked for my help. If I don’t save them then I…" Tru’s voice trails off. She can’t even bear to say it anymore. "And then with Jack…who knows how he’s gonna try and get in my way today!"

Davis sighed. "You can do this, Tru. All you have to do is focus. Don’t worry about Jack right now. Just focus on making sure that plane doesn’t leave."

Tru lets out a breath as she arrives at the airport, making her way through the terminal.

"Right… thanks, D."

"You’re welcome."

"I’ll give you a call if I need anything." Tru closes her cell and continues wandering around the terminal, finally stopping at Lindsay’s gate. As she makes her way to the gate’s counter, someone hurriedly rushes by her.

"Excuse me, miss," a man in a long, black overcoat says gruffly, giving her a slight nod. "I’m sorry."

Tru dismisses the encounter from her mind as she approaches the gate’s counter. The time for Lindsay’s flight isn’t posted yet - it’s still too early.

"Excuse me," Tru inquires. "What time does this afternoon’s flight to England depart at?"

The young girl behind the gate counter checks her computer and says "It departs at 4:30 p.m."

Tru gives the girl a brief smile of thanks before walking off, checking her watch.

Her plane wouldn’t take off for at least another six hours; however, until then, the clock was ticking and people’s lives were at stake - their destinies are in her hands.

Suddenly…

"Aww… what’s with the long face, Tru?"

Oh, shit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru feels an involuntary shiver run down her spine. She didn’t have to turn around to identify the voice of the speaker. She knows it all too well. It was this voice that haunted her in her dreams after Luc’s death, this voice that makes her cringe when she looses her battle to Fate, and this voice that makes her question, now more than ever before, about Jensen. Was Fate meant to take its course already? Had Jensen already been destined to die? Or worse still - predestined?

"What is it this time, Jack," Tru says, her voice laced with annoyance as she reluctantly turns around to face him.

"’Aw, c’mon, Tru, is that really a nice way to go about greeting a friend?" Jack asks playfully, enjoying every minute of taunting her.

"We’re not friends, Jack," Tru retorts. "You’re a royal pain in my ass that doesn’t seem to know the meaning of ‘leave me alone’.”

"Oh, that’s a little harsh now, don’t you think? Could it be your bad mood is because your friend Lindsay is going to die today?"

"She’s not going to die today, Jack. That was yesterday. At least this time I’ve got the upper hand. I don’t have to get into her life, I’m already in it. And just so we’re clear? Stay away from my friends," Tru warns hotly.

Jack puts his hands up in defense. "Message received. I just don’t want to see you meddling with Fate, Tru."

"My best friend is in danger. You don’t really expect me to just stand by and watch, do you?"

Jack just smiles at her as he responds. “Who said I was talking about Lindsay?”

Tru stares at him for a moment. “What do you mean?” Jack remains silent. “Fine, just stay the hell out of my way today Jack.” And with that Tru turns sharply on her heel and walks away, leaving a smugly grinning Jack behind her

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carrie makes her way into the morgue, wearing the shortest skirt she could find. She really turns on the sex appeal as she walks through the intake area and into Davis’ office. Carrie was all caught up on Jack’s strategy for today and she aimed to make it work. Not to mention she really likes playing around with Davis. She leans against the door frame, making sure that the fact that her blouse has its two top buttons undone was in full view, her hand against her hip. Carrie looks at Davis sitting at his computer typing, completely immersed in what he’s doing.

“Hey there, handsome…”

Davis looks up from his computer screen at the blindingly beautiful older woman standing in his doorway, completely forgetting the schedule he was trying to finish tonight. He immediately takes his sweaty hands off the keyboard and hides them under his desk. Davis always gets nervous around Carrie, whether she’s around for 30 minutes or 3 seconds he never really knows how to act when she’s there.

“Uh… hi Carrie…”

The sexy psychiatrist pulls herself off the door frame and slowly saunters towards her willing, nervous target. She moves around the desk as she speaks, “You’re looking pretty intense there, busy saving the world?” Carrie sits on the edge of the desk and leans a bit towards Davis. Davis shifts in his seat before pushing back on the swivel chair he’s sitting in, putting some extra distance between them and making him more comfortable. She looks at him with an expectant look.

All of a sudden, Davis is snapped out of his reverie. The stocky mortician glances quickly between computer screen and his girlfriend, as if putting the pieces together. “Oh, uh… no, I’m just working on next week’s schedule. I don’t usually do the saving though.” He squirms even more as she smiles like a siren.

Carrie notices the increase in stress on Davis and decides to back off a little, sitting up slightly as she responds to his statement, knowing the answer full well. “Of course, Tru’s the one who does the heavy lifting. Is she working today?” She looks out to the intake area as if checking to see if Tru was around.

“No she’s… out, in the field.”

She returns her focus back to the sweaty palmed doctor. “Saving someone from a gruesome death no doubt?” She says with a hint of pride in her voice to open Davis up a little, relax him.

It seems to work a little and he responds. “Yes, actually, one of her best friends was on a plane yesterday that got blown up. She’s out trying to keep her from it.”

Carrie feigns reserved shock at the realization of what Tru is doing. “Really, that must be hurting her pretty bad. Can I do anything? Maybe I could talk to her and make her feel better.” The psychiatrist offers, hoping to get more info.

He good-naturedly responds. “No, she’s handling it all right. Thank you for asking though.” He says with a sheepish smile.

“So there’s absolutely nothing I can do?”

“Not unless you can ground flight 740 somehow.” He admits freely.

Carrie leans into him, more than she did before and smiles. “Well, not really something I’m used to doing, but I can give it some thought.”

The older bearded man smiles at his psychologist girlfriend and gets flushed at her apparent caring nature. “Thanks…” She slowly stands up and sways her butt seductively as she leaves. He watches her leave and gets all tingly.

Carrie leaves the morgue and takes out her cell phone, opening it and dialing a number. She listens to it ring until someone picks up. “Homeland Security…” She smiles at the thought of what she’s about to do. “Yes, I’d like to file a report. I’m a psychologist and I have reason to believe one of my patients may attempt to ground a plane.” The man on the other end is intrigued. “What’s the name?”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru walks down the mall’s main strip towards the food court where she’s supposed to meet her best friend Lindsay. As she approaches she sees Lindsay stand up from one of the many eating tables and head her way. Tru can’t help but feel goose-bumps down her arms as she sees her childhood friend who last she saw was dead and lifeless inside a destroyed plane. Lindsay does her best to smile despite all the pain behind it. The pain is not lost on Tru. She sees it and only wants to help put a stop to it, among other things. They both stop in front of each other, unsure of how to act since yesterday.

“Hey…” Tru leads with, not really knowing what else to say.

“Hey Tru…” Lindsay leans forward and hugs her long time friend. It’s a little more comfortable for Lindsay than it was yesterday as she left for England. Tru on the other hand is physically shaken by the hug. She remembers what it was like yesterday to hold her dead best friend in her arms. Lindsay steps back and looks at Tru with concern, despite her feelings. “What’s wrong?”

Tru looks aside, trying to hide the worry she has of how this day could go. “It’s nothing.”

Lindsay decides to leave it for now. Things haven’t exactly gone well between them since she decided to take this little trip back home, and she knows at least some of that is her fault. After Randall left her for that 2 dollar tramp of an English assistant he had, Lindsay panicked, needed to feel something other than lost in a strange land. She booked a flight to the only place she felt safe, called Tru and pretty much sprung the idea that she’d be there over night. “Okay… well, you wanna sit down or something?”

Tru looks to the place where Lindsay was sitting as she responds. “Sure…”

The two best of friends move to the table and sit down at opposite ends. Neither knew exactly what to say. Yesterday hadn’t exactly gone well. Tru shifts in her seat uncomfortably. She didn’t really expect this to happen, and especially didn’t expect to have to do this a second time around. Tru wasn’t exactly happy to see Lindsay again so quickly. They’d barely spoken since Lindsay had left for England with her husband. Tru received no updates about how things were going ‘across the pond’ as they say, with her new husband. You’d think with all the ways people communicate these days, email, instant messages, telephone… with all those ways, not to mention letters and postcards, Tru figured she’d hear from Lindsay somehow, some way. But Tru hadn’t received anything more than an ‘I arrived okay, no need to worry’ message on her answering machine. She was still kind of bitter about that, even on a day 2. Now here they are again, wondering what to say to each other.

Tru looked at Lindsay, “So, how are you?” she said, hoping to make this conversation end better than it did the first time.

Lindsay sighs heavily, trying to find a way to respond. “I’m really not sure how to answer that. I thought I had everything figured out. In the short time we were married, I was so sure that it would be forever. And then I caught him with that…” She pauses as what happened comes back to her. “… tramp. Everything has changed since then.”

Tru reaches over and places her hand on Lindsay’s, trying to comfort her friend the way she did yesterday. “It’ll be okay, Linds. You’ll find a way to get your life back on track and it’ll be fine.”

The blonde lookes down at their hands and then smiles a genuine smile at her medical student friend. “I’m just, trying not to think about it right now. It’s one of the reasons I came back, to see my best friend Tru… and to have a little fun.”

Tru smiles as much as she can as she speaks. “Well, I don’t know how much fun I can be but I’ll definitely give it a shot.”

“Okay then, let’s do that shopping thing we came here to do.” Lindsay says as she gets up from her seat, waiting for Tru to join her.

“Good plan.” Tru responds, standing up and heading off towards the first shop.

This was going well. Yesterday they had spent a few minutes talking and wallowing in their respective pity before going off to shop in a depressed mood. This time they were in a slightly forced, chipper mood. Tru had more work to do, she knew that. She had to figure out a way to keep the plane from taking off and saving all the other people that asked for help yesterday, but Lindsay also asked for help, and if Tru could just find a way to keep Lindsay in a good enough mood she wouldn’t get on that plane and it might not blow up. After all, Fate had a habit of being cruel to the people she cared about like Harrison, Luc, Jensen, and now Lindsay. If Tru could keep Lindsay off that plane, Fate might not have a reason to kill all the other people on the plane too. Now all she had to do was worry about Jack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a bright and sunny street, Harrison is standing on the edge of the sidewalk in front of Avery’s apartment, waiting for her to come down. The scruffy younger brother of Tru figured since his sister said that he screwed things up with Avery yesterday, he’d get a jump start on it today. Take her out and buy her something, make her like him a little bit more than usual just in case he did something stupid when they met up with Lindsay later on today. So far the plan is going well. Avery will be coming down any minute, and they’ll be going out to the mall to look through CDs or clothes or something. Not much of a plan, but it was still working, or so he thought…

“Hey buddy…”

Harrison turns immediately to see Jack standing next to him at the curb. He looks around, trying to figure out where his former friend came from. “You really should stop doing that, Jack. If you sneak up on the wrong person you might find yourself in front of a moving bus.”

Jack just smirks at Tru’s brother. “I thought you were the one going around messing with Fate and helping your big sis save people.”

Harrison kind of grins at Jack and continues to people-watch while waiting for his girlfriend. “Maybe so, but according to your whacko theory I’m already messing with Fate just by existing. So what does it really matter whether I help her or not?”

Jack glances at Harrison briefly. “That’s true, but then you really have to ask yourself. Could this really be your fault?”

The reformed gambler turns to Jack on the sidewalk and gives him a questioning look. “What are you talking about, Jack?”

Jack faces Harrison, putting his hands in his pockets as he explains. “Think about it, Harrison, the fact that you’re still around causes so many ripples in Fate. You touch a lot of lives every day, even if you don’t realize it, and you and Lindsay touched each other deeply once upon a time. How do you know that today isn’t your fault?” Harrison glares at the one who tried to get him killed not more than a year ago.

“My fault…?”

Jack’s grin gets wider. “Yes, how do you know that Fate isn’t punishing you for being alive? Fate doesn’t forget things, Harrison. It remembers that you’re supposed to be dead and you’re not. It can’t just let you get away with that. For all you know, Fate is taking out the fact that it can’t have you…on Lindsay.”

Harry has to pause to at least consider the words Jack is spinning. Eventually he just rolls his eyes at his sister’s arch-nemesis. “Whatever Jack…” The one that most of the morgue staff would call ‘Death’ looks into Harrison’s eyes for a moment to gauge his reaction to his own words. He could see the wheels turning in Tru’s brother’s head and was satisfied that he’d laid the proper ground work.

He decides to put one more thought into Harry’s head. “Hey, I’m just speaking the truth.”

Harrison scoffs at Jack “Your truth maybe…”

Jack chuckles. “It’s Fate’s truth, Harrison, not mine. It’s why good old Jensen left Tru, and why you could never make it work with Lindsay. Heck, it’ll probably screw up your relationship with Avery eventually.” Harrison feels a little hint of anger rising in him.

“You stay away from my girlfriend.”

Jack lets a moment pass before responding. “Fine, just don’t be surprised if something happens to…”

“Harrison…” Jack is interrupted by Avery, the feisty redhead who comes their way. Both young men turn to Avery and smile. Avery is slightly put off by the stranger standing next to her boyfriend. Something about his smile bothers her. She ignores him for the time being as she approaches her boyfriend, leaning into him and placing a short but soft kiss on his lips.

“Hey baby.” Harrison tangles his fingers with his girlfriend’s. Avery immediately turns to her guy’s companion.

In her own abrupt way, Avery says “Who’s the guy?”

“He’s…” Harrison is cut off by Jack’s interruption.

“Jack Harper, nice to see you again, I think we met at Tru’s Christmas party a while back…” Jack extends his hand in greeting.

Avery takes his hand, though she does have a weird feeling about him. “Avery Bishop. So you’re a friend of Tru’s?”

Harrison turns his back to Jack, putting himself between his girl and his sister’s mortal enemy. “He’s not a friend, Ave. Let’s not waste any time on him.”

Jack just stands there watching as Harrison tries to hurry his girlfriend away. He calls out to them as they go. “It was nice meeting you.”

Avery can’t help but look back at Jack as she leaves with a questioning look. Harrison on the other hand is committed to not looking back and spending time with his girl. It’s in both their best interests to make sure Avery stays the hell away from Jack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru adjusts the hem of the jeans she just put on in the changing room of The Gap. She looks them over before opening the door and walking out into the main area where the mirrors are. Tru looks to the changing room next to her and notices that her best friend is still behind the door. Lindsay speaks up as Tru checks herself in the mirror.

“So, he just left you?”

Tru sighs at the topic Lindsay has been inquiring about for the past few minutes. “Yeah, he just up and left. I suppose I’d be okay if it was just me he’d left. I could deal with seeing him every day as long as it was what he wanted. But he didn’t just leave me, he left school, he left town, and I have no idea where he went.”

Lindsay finishes putting on her pants and opens the door, coming out to join Tru in the main hall of the dressing rooms. “Well, he’s a dunce for leaving such a hot girl as you. Just be thankful you didn’t find him screwing his secretary in your own bed.”

Tru twists her lower half toward the mirror to check out how her butt looks in her jeans, wondering if she should buy them. “I almost wish he had.” She regretted her words the second she said them. The time-traveling brunette turned to her friend Lindsay, who had a pained look on her face. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean…”

Lindsay interrupts Tru before she could finish. “It’s okay, don’t worry about it.” She goes back to checking herself out before Tru can say anything more. After a moment of tension Lindsay backs up and does a full modeling turn for Tru. “What do you think?”

Tru observes the pants as she spins and looks analytically at them. “I don’t know, I don’t really like the look of the back pockets.”

Lindsay stops and does her best to check out her backside. “Hmm, well I like them.” She says before looking up at Tru, who has a pondering look on her face. “What?”

“Nothing…” Tru responds as she looks toward where the entrance to the changing rooms is. She knows that Avery should be coming along any minute. She counts the seconds. Even with the fact that their earlier conversation had gone well, she still felt the tension between them over the lack of communication. She was hesitant to bring up the subject, as that along with the lunch they were about to have were the main reasons Lindsay had decided to get on the plane later today. Tru knew she had to keep that from happening at any cost. She would not lose her again today.

Lindsay notices the far off look in Tru’s eyes. “Tru…?” Her friend calling her name forces Tru out of her reverie.

“Hmm…?” Tru turns to look at Lindsay, a confused look on her face.

Lindsay rolls her eyes and scoffs. “I guess some things never change.”

“What do you mean?” Tru asks.

“Almost every time we went shopping or having coffee or whatever back before I moved, you always had your head somewhere else.” Lindsay sighs in heavy frustration as she runs her thumbs under the waistband of her jeans. “You never would tell me why either. You just had to keep it a big secret, from everyone.”

Tru can’t help but feel bad at the look she can see in Lindsay’s eyes reflected in the mirror. “Look, Linds…”

“Tru…?” Avery walks into the changing room with a rather attractive top in her hands. Both Tru and Lindsay turn to look at the redheaded medical student.

Tru feigns shock at seeing Avery walking unexpectedly into the changing room. “Avery… hey…” Tru looks between Lindsay and Avery, noticing the questioning look on both their faces. “What are you doing here?”

Avery smiles brightly at Tru, showing off the top in her hands. “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m shopping. I guess I don’t have to ask what you’re doing here.”

Tru chuckles at Avery’s directness which she finds so interesting. “Right…” Lindsay fake coughs and Tru realizes she hasn’t done her introductions. “Oh, uh, Avery… this is Lindsay, my best friend visiting from England. Lindsay, this is Avery, she goes to med school with me.”

Avery approaches Lindsay, extending her hand. After a moment, Lindsay takes it and they shake hello. “Hey…”

Avery kinda looks at Lindsay with a quizzical eye. “Hey there…”

An uncomfortable amount of silence is forced into the air between the three of them. Tru decides to break the tension. Tru points to the top in Avery’s hand. “Nice top, you gonna try it on?”

Avery glances around the changing room area. “That’s what I’m doing here. Trying clothes on is kinda the point of being here, isn’t it? Harrison’s across the hall at the record store that sells DVDs.”

Just as Lindsay is about to go back into her room to change out of the jeans, the sound of Harrison’s name gets her attention. She turns to the redhead. “Harrison’s here?” Lindsay says with a hopeful sound in her voice. Tru can’t help but notice the happiness in Lindsay’s voice, the same as she did yesterday. Lindsay contemplates the presence of Harrison for a few moments before continuing. “You know Tru, it’s almost lunch time and I’m getting kinda hungry. Maybe once we’re done here the four of us can grab lunch at the old diner? I used to love doing that.”

The conversation was going just like it did yesterday. Tru had to be sure it went better than before. Tru looked to Avery. “I don’t know, Ave? What do you think?”

Avery looks between Tru and her friend for a moment, unsure of what to think. She had heard the expectant hope in Lindsay’s voice, wondering at what exactly was the deal with this blonde woman and her boyfriend. Maybe if they had lunch together she might be able to figure it out. “Sure… but first I’m going to try this on.” She says as she heads into the changing room next to Tru’s.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carrie makes her way into the morgue, heading straight for Davis in his office again. She speaks into her cell phone quietly enough so that Davis can’t hear before closing the conversation. “Thanks, Jack.”

Davis looks up into the morgue as he hears something outside. He’s pleasantly surprised to see Carrie coming his way. He’d been working on a way to get the plane grounded somehow and hadn’t had much luck. There’s no way the airline would take a call from someone in the morgue who’s trying to get them to ground a plane. Not to mention Homeland Security would flag him in a second if he were to call them. He really didn’t want the government looking into his morgue and the employees working there, especially with Tru’s special abilities and the things she goes around doing. Hopefully Carrie had more luck.

Carrie sauntered into Davis’ office with a sexy smile on her face. “Hey, how’s it going?”

Davis gets up out of his chair and wipes the sweat off his hands before combing his hair a little with his hands, trying to make himself look presentable to her. “Hey Carrie… did you have any luck?”

Carrie smiles at him as she moves towards him more. “Actually, I did. I called Homeland Security and told them that a patient of mine might be thinking about hijacking a plane. They said they’d look into it and ground the plane if necessary.”

Davis sighs heavy in relief at this news. “Oh… that’s good. I wasn’t really sure I could do it.”

Carrie moves up close to him, taks his tie in her hands and plays with it a little. “I guess it’s a good thing that you have me then, isn’t it?”

The portly morgue attendant smiles at his girlfriend. “Y-yes, it-it really is… I’m glad you found a way. I was kinda coming up empty.”

The mole psychiatrist straightens her target’s tie. “Well, now that we’ve got that taken care of, maybe you and I should have lunch. I hear there’s a great little place down the street. We could get a booth and talk.”

Davis backs up a little and gets flustered. “W-well yeah, sure… that sounds like a lot of fun. I’ll just, change my coat and… and then we can go.”

Carrie’s smile turns into a grin. “Great…” She turns on her heel and walks into the intake area. “Let’s go.”

Davis immediately takes off his lab coat and grabs his regular coat from the coat rack 5 feet away. He leaves his office and follows Carrie out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru, Harrison, Lindsay and Avery are all sitting in a booth at the Standard Diner, a noticeable uncomfortable silence between them, Tru and Lindsay on one side, and Harrison and Avery on the other. Lindsay has just finished telling Harrison and to a lesser extent, Avery, her tale of woe from England. No one really knows what to say to that. Tru has already offered her condolences about the situation. Harrison is trying to make sure he doesn’t say something that might upset Avery, and Avery doesn’t really know enough about Lindsay to care. Not to mention the vibe she’s picking up between the blonde and her boyfriend.

Harrison finally decides to break the silence between them. “Well, I never really thought Randall was good enough for you anyway.”

Lindsay smiles at Harrison’s helpful comment. Feeling good that Harrison would be that nice to her. She still cares very much about him and she can’t help thinking that a comment like that could lead to something more, a rekindling of sorts of feelings that she tried to let go of after marrying Randall but never could. Even though Lindsay had come back to see her best friend and think over her life, some part of her had still hoped that something would happen between her and Harrison. “Thanks, Harrison…”

Avery couldn’t help but hate the way Lindsay was looking at her boyfriend. Harrison was with her, not this blonde chick. She pulls her hand up onto the table and takes Harrison’s hand in hers. The feisty redhead watches Lindsay’s reaction as she sees her and Harrison’s hands intertwine. Lindsay sits back, shaken by the sudden realization of what’s happening between Avery and Harrison.

Tru does her best to salvage the situation. “Lindsay, I…”

Lindsay moves to get out of the booth. “I, I need to go to the bathroom, I’ll be right back.”

Tru tries to follow her but just as she’s about to get close to leaving the table Jack slides into the booth, cutting her off. “Tru, well isn’t this just the strangest coincidence? I come in to get some food, and here you are. I thought I’d sit down and say hello.” Jack looks to the three others sitting around the booth and smiles, getting two cold looks and one confused one.

Tru decides to be the first to speak. “Hello Jack, now get out of my way.”

Jack doesn’t move despite Tru’s request. “You know, every time I meet one of you Davies you make some mean remark towards me. Did I do something wrong?”

First Tru then Harrison look to Avery with a hesitant thought. Tru is the first to respond to Jack’s obvious remark. “That’s putting it mildly, Jack, now get your butt out of the booth so I can get out.”

This time Jack actually does as Tru asks, slowly getting up and letting Tru out of the booth to go after Lindsay. “Well okay, but I kinda wanted to have an important conversation with you Tru, especially with that flight leaving later today.”

Tru starts heading to the bathroom but stops at Jack’s words, turning around. She walks right at him, forcing him to back up in his own nonchalant way. When Tru is sure they’re far enough from Avery and Harrison she speaks. “What are you planning, Jack?”

The former morgue worker holds up his hands as if in surrender. “Nothing, what the heck could I do? You’ve got a plane to stop, all I have to do is wait for it to take off. The passengers will do the rest for me.”

Tru glares at him with a questioning look. “What do you mean the passengers will do the rest for you?”

“Well, let’s just say there are some unsavory folks scheduled to take a flight out to England at 4:30 this afternoon. People you don’t really want on the plane if you expect the other passengers to survive.” He starts to back up as if he’s leaving. “I could give you their names if you want. They’re all locked up here.” He taps his temple to indicate what’s in his head. “But hey, maybe you found some other way to keep the plane on the ground.”

A waitress behind the counter calls out an order. “Pick up for Harper?”

Jack smiles at Tru and then turns away, taking the food from the waitress and paying for it before leaving.

The time traveling morgue assistant had to admit as much as she hated it, Jack did have a point. She’s been focused on Lindsay so much she nearly forgot to check on the plane. Tru takes out her cell phone and dials the morgue. She listens to it ring a few times before the morgue voicemail picks up. Tru hangs up her phone, wondering where Davis was. She dials Davis’ personal number and waits for him to pick up. After about five or six rings she hears the familiar click of a phone being picked up. “Davis?”

“Oh uh, yes, Tru…” Davis tries his best to concentrate on the phone conversation but Carrie is being extremely distracting.

Tru can hear the distraction in his voice and she doesn’t like it. “Davis, I can’t figure out how I’m gonna get the plane grounded. Jack just showed up and from what he said I think there might be terrorists on the plane.”

Davis chuckles at Carrie’s ministrations before responding. “That could be, Tru, but it also could be what Jack wants you to think. Besides, you don’t have to worry about the plane, I took care of it.”

Tru has to take a second to get over the shock of what Davis just said. She was almost certain that neither of them would be able to get a plane grounded. “How did you do that?”

“Uh… I, I called Homeland Security and told them that I was worried that someone I knew would be disruptive on the plane. They said they’d ground the flight until they could check out the passengers.” Davis says, explaining what was done while leaving out the part about Carrie’s help.

“Oh, well, that’s good. We should still follow up though. Its 3:45 now, do you think you could call the airline and confirm that the plane is grounded?” Tru says, hearing the background noise of a restaurant Davis is in through her cell phone.

“Sure Tru, no problem. I’ll call them right away.”

Tru sighs in relief, knowing Davis has her back. “Thanks D…”

Davis chuckles again. “Like I said, I’m here for you. I’ll let you know when I have something.”

“Okay, I’ll talk to you soon, Davis.”

She closes her flip phone and turns back to the situation at hand. Tru had wanted to go into the bathroom after Lindsay but the annoying distraction that is Jack kept her from it. She starts to go towards the bathroom but Lindsay comes out at that moment, heading straight for the booth they were just sitting in. Tru goes up to her just as she’s grabbing her coat.

Lindsay takes her coat and turns to Harrison and Avery sitting in the booth. She’s visibly upset. “Look, I’m…it was nice seeing you again Harrison and, it was… nice to meet you Avery but uh, I think I’m just gonna go.”

Harrison and Tru look at each other for a moment, knowing this won’t end well. Tru is the first to speak up. “No, Linds, come on, stay. We can go to the movies or something. Go to a club maybe?”

Harrison decides to back his sister up. “Yeah, come on. We could have a lot of fun, the four of us.” Harrison feels the hand Avery is still holding squeeze a little tighter.

Lindsay considers the idea for a moment before dismissing it. “No, I, I think I’m just gonna go home. I’m sure there’s a flight back heading out soon. Good thing I got an open ended ticket, I can leave whenever I want. I’ll see you guys.” She turns and leaves, brushing right past Tru and saying one last thing. “Thanks for the vacation, Tru.”

Tru looks to her brother and Avery. “I’m gonna… I’ll be right back.” With those words Tru turns and follows Lindsay out of the diner. As she gets out the door, she finds Lindsay standing at the curb hailing a cab. “Linds…” Her blonde friend looks at Tru but doesn’t respond. She just keeps her hand in the air to get a cab’s attention. “Look, I’m sorry about what you saw in there. Harrison and Avery are together now but that doesn’t mean you should leave the country.”

Lindsay glances at Tru briefly before turning her attention back to the street. “Why not…? It’s not like I have any reason to stay.”

Tru can’t help but feel hurt by Lindsay’s statement. “You do, Lindsay. Come on, you lived most of your life here, there are other things you could do. Try and get work at some marketing firm. There are things that you can do. You don’t have to pin everything on what’s happening with Harrison. Stay, please…” A cab pulls up to the curb and stops.

“I can’t, I’m sorry, it’s just not something I’m ready for. I at least have to go back and settle the divorce with Randall.”

Lindsay’s best friend tries to get her to stay. “Yeah, but you don’t have to do it right now. Wait a day maybe.”

Lindsay looks at Tru for a few short moments before opening the cab door and getting inside. “I can’t.”

Tru sighs heavily knowing she has to stop her from going to the airport. Even if the plane has been grounded she still has to be sure that Lindsay doesn’t get on a different plane that will blow up because she’s on it. She looks at her watch as she goes around in front of the taxi so it can’t go without her. The time on her watch says 3:59pm. She leans forward to the driver’s side, to try to make sure Lindsay doesn’t hear her. “Can you take the scenic route to the airport please?” She takes out a $10 bill and slips it to the cab driver.

He looks at the bill and then nods discreetly.

Tru then goes to the back door and gets in next to Lindsay. “Okay, let’s go.” The cab pulls off the curb and starts to the airport.

Lindsay looks at Tru sitting next to her, a little offended by what she’s done. “What are you doing, Tru?”

“Look, I still think you shouldn’t go right away. I mean, you just got here and all. But if you really want to leave, then I’m not just going to let my best friend leave without a proper goodbye.”

Lindsay sighs with resignation, the hurt of what happened a few moments ago still in her eyes. “Fine…”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru Davies sits in the seat next to her best friend in a cab headed for the airport just as she did yesterday. She’s scared of what’s happening. They are headed towards the very airport where Lindsay was killed yesterday and although she’s convinced the plane is grounded for the day, she still fears that if Lindsay got on some other plane, it would suffer the same fate as yesterday. She looks to Lindsay briefly, only to look away just as Lindsay looks back.

Tru decides to break the silence as she did yesterday. “Lindsay…”

“I was so stupid.” She says, interrupting Tru. Their eyes meet as the conversation continues.

“You’re not stupid, Linds.” Tru tries to reassure her friend.

“I came back thinking that Harrison would just be waiting for me. That I could come back and just pick up where we left off.” Lindsay’s eyes drift down to the end of her knees as she speaks.

Tru can’t help but sigh, knowing she’s right. “Maybe you were, but just because Harrison isn’t available does not mean you don’t have anything worth being here for. Just because Randall cheated on you doesn’t mean you don’t have something worth finding in England. Stay here a few more days at least. Even if you do go back to England tomorrow, the divorce won’t be finalized right away, right?”

“No, it won’t.”

“So stay here for a few days. You don’t have to leave right now, do you? You came back to town because you wanted to get away from England and Randall. Going back isn’t going to do you any good. You’re just going to be reminded of how alone you are over there. But here you’ve got people who care about you and want you to be okay. Come on Lindsay, stay. At least for the full week you were planning on.” Tru says, putting everything on the line in that one small speech. She watches as she sees the wheels turning in her friend’s head.

Lindsay sighs in resignation. “All right, I’ll stay.”

Tru smiles, knowing she’s probably saved her friend an early death. “Good, okay…” She leans forward to talk to the cab driver. “Would you mind turning this cab around? We’re going back to my place instead of the airport.” Tru can’t help but feel good as the cab turns around with her friend heading away from the airport.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tru opens her refrigerator freezer door and pulls out a tub of chocolate ice cream to go with the tube of cookie dough she just gave to Lindsay. She turns to her blonde best friend and smiles. They both head back to Tru’s couch to pig out and have a little fun if they can.

Tru smiles as she plops down on her couch and Lindsay does the same “See? Isn’t this so much better than sitting on a plane for 6 hours to eat bangers and mash? Whatever that is…”

Lindsay grabs the remote control off the coffee table and turns on the TV. She’s about to pick up the first of a couple romantic comedies they picked up to wallow in their singleness when a new bulletin plays on the screen. The announcer begins his report. “Tragic news today as flight 740 to England exploded in mid take-off this afternoon…”

Tru all but goes white and tunes out the TV voice over pictures from the crash playing on the screen.
