Last night was Primus. Worked till about 5, ate dinner and walked up to the Austin Music Hall. He got in around 7:45, first band started at 8:30. First band: Drums & Tuba.

Very interesting setup, look, & sound. Good quality sound. Consisted of a drummer who was also the singer, a guitar player (that looked like 1960's Fidel Castro), and a Tuba. The Tuba player was first, a really great player. I was close enough to really watch his movements, he was better than most tuba players I hear on campus, on par with grad. performance players. He had a huge box full of processors. I assume there was a mic in the bell and that's how he altered his sound. He also pulled out what I think was a flugelhorn which I did see a mic in the bell. He would at times have the tone of a typical electric bass, with the same types of riffs, and at times would do spacey leads that sounded like a synth. There was also a sampler in his box, and on the drums. At one point, the drummer took the riff the tuba was playing, and sampled it while they were playing, so that part kept going while the tuba took the melody, the tuba did the same with a guitar part in one song, and with his own part for the beginning of one song. The guitar was subtle but interesting, the last song he had a really neat part all over the guitar, and at time used it like a bass. I enjoyed seeing this band, the music was progressive and out there, but not overly so. No real vocal hooks, but lots of musical hooks, esp. in the tuba. 4 stars

Primus took the stage about 9:45, Les had a silvery vest-jacket on and a top hat with glasses. We were about 4 rows back right in front of Les(stage left) when they started. First song was one that I don't have, didn't really recognize it, but it was fun. Guitar broke a string first song. I can't remember if it was Sgt. Baker or Here come the Bastards up after that. I saw our old bass player, dave, in the crowd around us at this point and said hello. Then he got out the standing bass, did Seas of cheese extended, jammed on that, then talked to the crowd for a while. He asked "how is austin?" Cheers. Then, "Now I don't necessarily mean you all here, more how is this place?" Or something like that. "Because I'm from N. California..." Then he says something about shooting bears and how you can't do it in California, and he doesn't like that. "Perhaps it has something to do with it being on the flag..." I couldn't hear everything when the crowd lit up. But he says something about some of his rich friends, in the silicon industry maybe, telling him that Austin the the place to be, and he might check us out or something. The crowd was livid, I couldn't make out much of this. It calmed down, and he goes into 'the music industry' and how it's an interesting place. "There are some aspects I'm not so interested in. But I have to say, that aside, it is the best damn job I've ever had! Now enough of that." Into Mr. Krinkle. :) Found Mic somewhere around this point, he made it up to the front and it was myself, K, Mic, and Dave all together. Not sure what was next, but somewhere around here was Is it luck? Crazy. I got to see how he did this live, just amazingly easy when he does it. During the breakdown, they went jam-band, even at one point breaking into one riff of Tommy the Cat during the quiet part of that song, then back into the end of Is it luck? Also somewhere around here was American Life, K couldn't figure out how he was playing when she was hearing, he did it some seamlessly. Once they broke into My name is Mud, I knew it was about over. I decided I had had enough of the front and I would start making my way to the back for the last few songs. Then Jerry was a racecar driver started, and the crowd was a hopping! I just started hopping to my left, right out of the crowd! I got some water, they played one more, and the lights came up. Good show, I was soaked when I got out, and got some pics on my phone, I'll see how those turned out. Walked home around 11:15.
