Milton may be accurate, in some cases

What though the field be lost?
All is not lost; th' unconquerable will,
And study of revenge, immortal hate,
And courage never to submit or yield.

It's been far too long since we vowed, in the depths of Hell, to attempt to overthrow Heaven once again.

I believe that most of us have forgotten that vow.

What is left for us, if not that?

Respectfully, my lord, I am still of the opinion that we do not need Heaven. Why even bother? It is hardly worth the effort.

As your prime sin is Greed, Mammon, I understand your opinion.

I, on the other hand, am in the habit of always wanting what seems unattainable.

Nothing is unattainable, given sufficient effort.

But if what you must spend to attain it is greater than what you earn, it is nothing more than a loss.

Then, in that case, I have no choice but to attempt to regain Heaven, for nothing else seems worth attaining.

*turns and gives Beelzebub a vaguely intense look*

If only that were enough.

*will touch Beelzebub's shoulder gently, but possesively*

Under any other circumstance, that would be enough.

*well, you had to expect that the words "Lucifer" and "emo" would somehow trigger the presence of one former angel*

*smiles -- a little hopeless one, but there it is* For you, my dear, there might at least be some hope of redemption still.

*dryly, but not exactly harshly -- all right, maybe a bit brutally realistic in the second sentence*

Or you could just give up your façade and simply join us. Why do you insist on taking a course that causes you so much misery?

*winces, and is tempted to just leave, but he stays there (probably against his own better judgement)* Why do you insist on taking a course that causes you so much pain?

Just as how you once said you do not despair: there is no misery for me -- not quite as much as I would have in your position, at any rate. The only flaw is feeling that, knowing that, the driving force behind why I've taken this path refuses to listen to reason.

*well, ouch; will retaliate with bitterness*

Perhaps this is simply what He has planned for us.

And why does your sort -- *lumps Raphael with all the other angels with a wave of his hand (though he's not technically an angel anymore)* -- always insist that your reasoning is right? How do you even know?

... You know, I might actually agree with you for once.

*sarcasm, ahoy* Oh, the shock and horror of it. It must be the end of the world.

Well that's what we're aiming for, right?

Kit bows, just a little, just enough to be polite.

"Greetings and defiance, fairest and fallen," he says, having decided that he's not really going to escape notice forever and might as well make himself known on his own terms.

"Aren't you getting tired of all that?" he adds, "Milton, I mean. I prefer Jeffers."

Lucifer raises an eyebrow at him.

"I've never liked Milton to begin with. But in everything that's popular, there's a seed of truth."
