Public Scrutiny

Some individuals thrive upon controversy and new experiences in equal parts, swimming in a volatile cocktail of life. Others flinch away from both and withdraw into themselves, disappearing from the public view in order to maintain their worlds. Still others attempt to balance the two extremes and benefit from all experience though enforced objectivity. Regulus was clearly of the last, quite unlucky, group.

Each day he had dreaded the rumours passed along through his peers and fought bitterly with a number of different instinctual responses to the situation. Just one slip of the tongue, just one careless glance - such minor things could destroy Remus, he was quite sure of it. In that terrible moment of- not aberration, but expression… in that terrible moment, as many answers had been granted as questions posed. In sober fact, Black’s new understanding of Lupin led him to care more for his timid friend than he had before.

At the present moment, of course, Regulus was on his way back from a supper both early and brief, flitting through the corridors as the other students approached the Great Hall in their normal demonstration of mass laziness. His recent lack of sleep showed clearly upon his pale skin, emphasized by the deepening shadows of his surroundings as he proceeded toward the dungeons.
