angel/jaye x-over of doom!

I have six different icons with this shot from Serenity, I love it that much. Jayne is seriously TEH SEX in that scene. Oh my.

But...this afternoon I took a break from all the Serenity madness and went out to see These Girls, the Canadian indie film starring David Boreanaz and Caroline Dhavernas. It was playing at the Vancouver Film Festival, which makes me feel slightly less bitter about always missing the Toronto Film Festival, which is where it premiered - with all the cast in attendance - a couple weeks back. It won't be released commercially until March, in Canada (no word yet on US/dvd distribution though).

The movie is a darkish comedy about three small-town girls who seduce, coerce and blackmail an older, married man into sleeping with each of them. Overall, I thought it was farily enjoyable. The characters aren't drawn out enough to be particularly sympathetic, but unfortunatly their lack of depth also falls a bit short of being genuine satire. The writing and editing could also have been a bit tighter. But, nevertheless, the performances are solid and there were a couple of poignant moments and a lot of very funny scenes, most of which revolved around DB's character, Keith, who is the pot-smoking, slightly-skeevy-but-still-sexy, assholish, going-nowhere older guy who realizes he's in way over his head. I think DB played the comedy really well - broader than on Angel, of course, but not over-the-top. He has a handful of genuinely hysterical scenes that had the audience roaring with laugther. Also, a couple of genuinely *naked* scenes. Yes, ass-of-DB constitutes a minor plot point in and of itself. That was a good moment. I'm hardly a DB fangirl, but he probably hasn't looked this good since S2 of Angel. Also, his baby is named Jasmine, which was just funny. Caroline Dhavernas was, as usual, adorable. Her character is a lot like Jaye - disenfranchised, apathetic and bitchy - but without the heart that makes Jaye endearing. She also works in a trailer park (!!!) flipping burgers. Amanda Walsh was suprisingly not awful as another one of the friends - she was a MuchMusic VJ for a few years and one of the most obnoxiously annoying, fugly people to pollute my television screen. Oh, and the movie opens with Metric's "Combat Baby", which is automatically huge points in its favour. :) All in all, a fun afternoon.

The director was there and did a Q&A afterwards. He mentioned that he knew DB from BtVS/Angel but he wasn't the first choice - several guys had signed on and then dropped out before him. DB somehow got a hold of the script and expressed an interest (likely despite his agent's advice) and signed on a couple of days before production started. The director felt that DB really 'got' the character, and rather hilariously speculated that he had once been that guy - something about the "methodical" way he rolled his joints - or (covering his ass here) had maybe just known a guy like that. He said he cast Caroline before he saw Wonderfalls (only a couple episodes), which he mentioned has a "cult following" on dvd. He liked her reading of the character so much that he revamped the part, making her the narrator - he said she brought an intelligence to her character that gave her enough credible objectivity to comment on what was going on.

This song was in the movie and now I can't stop listening to it. I've been giving it to everyone I know, so I'll put it here too for anyone who's interested. All I know about this band is that they're Norwegian. Ephemera - Girls Keep Secrets in the Strangest Ways.

And while I'm here, some quick & random thoughts about VM 2x02:
- V/D sex is so boring I could weep. At least they didn't try to show them in the heat of passion or anything. But her bumping into Logan right afterwards? You know even her relationship with Duncan is All.About.Logan. Whee! And yes, they are so much fun when they're not getting along.
- The new girl was truly awful. What was up with that super-fake high-pitched voice that came and went at random times? Gah. Wallace can so do better.
- Veronica, remembering why she's a misanthrope. Aw, there's my girl. Her & Wallace are still the bestest BFFs ever.
- The Pixies! Are awesome!

Now I'm going to go make an apple pie for Thanksgiving. What I should be doing: piles and piles of homework. What I really want to be doing: going to see Serenity again. Bah.
