Once upon a time, there was an excellent lady who wrote some great stories in a whole lot of my favorite fandoms. She changed her username several times as well, which was a bit of a bummer for me because I made coverart for a podfic of her fic midway between two usernames and now it's all out of date.
But that's alright, because the podfic (and the original story) is still very awesome! It's
but we are at the crossroads, written by
wolfinglet (who used to be stardustcities, but has since moved on to the AO3.....but I made the coverart before this change happened, and no longer have the rough draft): Star Trek Reboot meets DOOM (the 2005 movie). In one of my favorite ST:xi crossover ideas, this story gives us a John "Reaper" Grimm who is also Leonard "Bones" McCoy. That's right - two of Mr. Karl Urban's more space-faring roles, fused together in a way that shows how the efficient killing machine Reaper could have become the compassionate Dr. McCoy. Plus, this fic's got a really interesting re-imagining of Jim Kirk's backstory in the ST:xi universe (it takes place entire post-canon for DOOM, mostly pre-canon for ST:xi, but the end of the fic catches us up with the destruction of Vulcan and it's aftereffects), and a whole mess of hurt-comfort for those of you who enjoy your James Kirk with bruises, emotional turmoil, and trust issues. There's a few moments of dubious consent in sexual situations (Jim is technically owned by John Grimm at certain points of the story, and has an off-screen history of implied sexual slavery as well. If this will squick you or cause triggery emotions, feel free to skip over this podfic), but everything gets cleared up and fully consensual by the end of the story.
I wanted to illustrate a specific scene from the story for the coverart: Jim's bruised hand on one of the transparent aluminum windows of the space station, providing a contrast between the infinite expanse of space surrounding them and the immediacy of Jim's current situation. The Intro/Outro music for this podfic is a selection from
Barbarism Begins At Home, as performed by The Smiths - I thought the topic of the story and the subject of the song were thematically similar. Additionally, this podfic is being used to fill the "space ships/stations" square of my au_bingo card - I felt that the setting of this story (a space station) was integral to allowing this crossover to work as beautifully as it did. Though they are both 'space' fandoms, without the space station to put both characters in the same place at the same time, this crossover would not exist.
