So, I haven't had a podfic post in almost a month. Between megaupload going down, and trying to put everything back up at mediafire, and then trying to find/fix links (which is a process that is very much still in progress (please be patient with me!)), and my birthday, and the idea for a big huge humongous podfic series for the PBB that's been kicking my butt (I'm so behind schedule, it's not even funny) - well, it's been kind of like writer's block, but for podfic posts. I can't seem to record anything, and when I do have something recorded, I can't think of what to say so that other people will even want to listen to it. (Whine, whine, whine. My life is so hard, y/y?)
But, since I'm posting tonight, it's clear that something has (finally) kicked me out of my funk. What something, you might ask? Why,
soldierly's birthday, of course!
See, she's got her name up on the BP List, and once upon a time we got to talking about things like podfics and
au_bingo and bb!Deadpool and Romulan!Kirk. In fact, she paid me some very fancy compliments about
Raised By Wolves, and I flailed a little bit over her terribly angsty yet equally heartwrenching
Bucky/Steve-in-SPAAAAAACE fic (it's on the To Be Podficced list, no worries), and then
soldierly pointed me in the direction of her very detailed, very world-built, very awesome Jim-Kirk-is-raised-by-the-crew-of-the-Narada story.
And, since it's
soldierly's birthday (did I mention that yet? I think I mentioned that...), and the story is awesome, and she's on the BP list, and I actually recorded this a few months ago (when she was still going by the username "stardustcities" - but I am lazy, and so did not go back to re-record this podfic (or fix the coverart, since I can't remember where the original, movable-parts, collage o' pixels actually went....and I don't want to start from scratch all over again)), may I present...... drumroll please.....
tell me how all this, and love too, will ruin us is a Star Trek Reboot alternate universe fanfic, featuring a Jim Kirk who has been raised in the Romulan warrior culture despite his Human limitations. Ayel (Nero's second-in-command aboard the Narada) is Jim's mentor and father-figure, as well as the tentative object of his pubescent affections. But, completely ignoring any pre-shippy shipping that might be hinted at in this story, this fic is full of world-building. I'm a sucker for stories where the author explores aspects of culture or custom that are only hinted at in the main text, and
soldierly does so magnificently in this fic. All the background information about a Romulan warrior's knife, and the significance of their distinctive tattoos, and even the little snippets of conversation that reveal ideological differences between the crew of the Narada and the rest of Romulus - all these and more are embedded in this story in such a way as to capture the reader's attention and immerse hir in life on the Narada. Plus, since Ayel only has, like, two lines in the entire Reboot movie, it was fun to see him developed as a character with depth and loyalty and emotions. (Fun fact: the explosion behind Ayel's head in the coverart? Is actually a picture of the Kelvin exploding - an explosion without which Jim would never have ended up in Ayel's care in the first place!)
You can find this podfic, clocking in around 15 minutes long, right
over here (thanks,
paraka, for hosting me), or you can stream the story by clicking below:
Don't forget to wish
soldierly a happy birthday when you download the podfic!
