 AMP 2011: Day 16

So, it was rainy and dreary and drizzly today (totally threw off the SPRING! vibes we had going, earlier in the week), so I sought to cheer myself up this afternoon with a re-watching of X-Men. There's this whole long backstory about how I saw the first forty-five minutes of the movie at a sleepover, and then we had to shut it off 'cause one of the girls got scared....so I never saw how it ended......which led to me spending an entire summer just after seventh grade hounding the local Blockbuster's to find a copy, and there might be a mention of how the guys at the counter eventually learned to fear my face and hide at the onslaught of my teenybopper wrath every time I came in and they still didn't have a copy of the movie, and how ultimately Dad just bought me a copy of the DVD (My very first DVD! Followed shortly by Lilo & Stitch!) just to make me stop bugging him.....but that's not important.

What's important is that pprfaith wrote a crossover between Buffy and the X-Men Movie'verse, and that story is called Say The Words. And I recorded it. Yay - portable X-Men AND Buffy, all in the same place!

The story picks up post-Chosen for BtVS, and rewrites her history in such a way as to make Buffy's backstory compatible with the X'verse. And then, pprfaith slots several other X'verse characters into intriguing interactions with Our Heroine, finding appropriate places in their backstories for Buffy to fill. Plus, Buffy's mutant powers are echoed in the storytelling itself: Buffy can speed up or slow down time, and the various parts of the story bounce back and forth from present day to past to future. It's pretty neat.

The podfic is only about 20 minutes long, and in that short timespan, pprfaith spins a believable crossover-verse for us to enjoy. The Scoobies' reactions to the Mutant Menace, in particular, struck a chord with me as definitely believable (especially in light of the general mood of the group, post-Chosen). As well, the perspectives of our favorite X-Men are in-depth and in character: Charles Xavier's voice is distinct, and at the same time fits so perfectly with what we know of him and his actions in the first X-Men movie. There are hints of things that might be BtVS 'season eight' canon, or might fall somewhere in the 20 or so years between X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the first X-Men movie....or they might simply be details pprfaith made up that are so real as to be substituted for canon on a whim.

Either way, download the mp3 here, and enjoy the story! Hopefully you'll be in a Mutant-y mood when you're done listening, and won't mind recommending a few other X-Men Xovers my way.....
