So, I've been mainlining
blackglass' podfic for DAYS lately, and they are the best thing ever. Seriously - all the Avengers! And Brooklyn Nine-Nine! And more Avengers! And everything is happy and wonderful and humorous and perfect in my ears.
Which basically meant that I needed to make a podfic for
blackglass (aka,
super-tricie341), as a thank-you present for filling my life with such glee (because that is how I make friends - I stalk them politely on the internet, and then I throw presents at them until they like me. It's a proven system. It works).
Which leads us to..... drumroll please.....
All things being equal, I'd rather be in Philadelphia, written by
meinterrupted (who has Blanket Permission to Podfic)
Darcy Lewis, SHIELD employee and non-superhero, gets swept up into an incident of everyday villainy. The Avengers aren't on-call, no super soldiers are in sight, and she's freaking out in the lobby of Bank of America. But maybe just hanging around Agent Phil Coulson, paperwork ninja, has rubbed some save-the-day mojo onto Darcy after all - because she's not a damsel in distress. She's a damsel with a taser.
The thing I recall most about my experience reading this story is how REAL it felt - Darcy's NOT a superhero, she DOESN'T have any juiced-up muscles or tech or fancy ninja assassin training. She's got ordinary citizen skills, and ordinary civilian tech, and a terrifyingly ordinary set of circumstances to handle. And she does - she freaks out, and she rallies, and Darcy saves the day - but it feels REAL. And Marisol is a sweetheart, who's the same age as Littlest Sis, which basically had me freaking out at the prospect of my 11-year-old sister getting caught in the crossfire like that... but also, hopefully, lent some depth to my performance. In a world full of above-and-beyond criminal activity, this story felt like something I could relate to. I could picture myself in Darcy's shoes, and (while I don't have Agent Coulson on speed-dial) I could envision myself reacting similarly. I remember thinking, "I could do that."
Please keep in mind the warnings for this fic - there are a few instances of racist and sexist language, as well as canon-typical levels of violence, and a hostage situation. This helps add to the immediacy and veracity of
meinterrupted's storytelling - the bad guys are assholes - but if you're worried that something might make you uncomfortable, don't hesitate to drop me a line.
The Intro/Outro music for this podfic is Underneath, as performed by Mighty Kate. I thought that the message of that song - underrated, unexpected, un-debated, undefeated - fit Darcy's metamorphosis throughout the story. I hope you agree.
This podfic has a run-time of 01:08:28, and can be downloaded as an mp3

paraka, for hosting me!) OR you can stream the story by clicking above.
.....which brings me to my conclusion:
blackglass likes Darcy/Steve. I like
blackglass. If you've stuck around to read this far, YOU like podfic. You will like
blackglass' podfics AND this podfic. Listen to all the podfics!
