Field Trips Are Awesome MASTERPOST

Sep 04, 2013 00:25

I made a thing! I made a whole bunch of things!

I participated in the 2013 round of xmenreversebang this year, contributing both a digital art prompt AND an audio/podfic prompt. The first project to go live? My podfic prompt!

My prompt got picked by the magnificent helens78, who not only is a podfic AND text-fic afficianado, but also has worked with me before on a collaborative creation (check out this podfic! and this podcast!) helens78 was SUCH a delight to work with on this - she was just as excited for my little plotbunny as I was, and that joy came out in SPADES in the story she wrote. Add in the numerous emails, Tweets, voice notes, and videos we sent back and forth during the creation of this project, and (even though I missed the deadline for main entries in pod_together this year) I would consider this a pinnacle of collaborative efforts on both our parts.

The basic summary?

The American Museum of Natural History is the best museum in the world.

The more detailed summary?

Charles Xavier is planning a summer field trip for his students, to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Thanks to a mis-dialed extension number, Charles leaves his booking info with the wrong person....and a serendipitous visit to The Best Museum In The World ensues.

This project started off as a single 2-minute podfic prompt....and then spawned a glorious 7K fic, complete with auditory and ocular interludes....which led to a 70-minute long podfic (Intro/Outro music: Science Is Real, as performed by They Might Be Giants; Musical Interludes: The Phoenix, as performed by Fall Out Boy)....and a banner, a podfic cover, multiple texted revelations, and a mock-biography....and then, a ficlet that leads to a SLIDESHOW.

That's right. helens78 and I made a KICKAWESOME project together.

Additional thanks for the creation of this project go to bessyboo, for giving this podfic a beta-listen; to Littlest Sis, for putting up with me over the course of eight hours, while I used her as part slideshow photographer and part age-appropriate barometer at the Museum; and finally, to analise010, for everything from helping me conceive of this plotbunny months ago, to reminding me when deadlines were, to role-playing out the text messaging sessions between Jean and Ororo and Scott, to helping me write that bitty post-fic slideshow ficlet, to putting up with me over the last six months. analise010 is kind of a miracle, guys.

You can find (all seven parts of) the entire Field Trips Are Awesome series on the AO3. It is magnificent. Go read! Go watch! Go listen! Go laugh! Leave helens78 ALL the love. Leave some love for me, too.

And then, when you're done loving this 'verse, go visit the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It really is the best museum in the world.

fandom: xmfc, other people's fanfic, my fanfic? really?, podfic, collaborative projects, potential storytime, not a podfic but worth a listen anyway, exciting technical developments, fandom: x-men movie'verse, i made coverart!
