Today (or should I say, yesterday) is a sad, sad day for comedy:
George Carlin is dead. He was one of the greats, and we shall not see his like for many, many years.
His comedy was smart and satirical; he pointed to our communal flaws and made us laugh at them, but that laughter always provoked thought. He broke tabboos and challenged barriers. I can't remember when I first came across him, but I did have the chance to see him live once, and it was one of the most truly memorable performances of my life.
Rest easy, George. You'll be missed, you dirty, magnificent old bastard.
