Carbon Taxing

Jun 20, 2008 10:02

So, the national Liberal Party (in Canada, for you internationals) has just announced it's new tax plan and the cornerstone of their platform in the next election: a carbon tax. This is to be a revenue-neutral, middle- and lower-class friendly, and long-term fiscal plan to both encourage "green" spending and consumption habits, and steer Canada through the epoch of climate change/end-of-oil. The Conservatives response? Attack ads, before the Liberals had even released the details of their plan. Shame, Mr. Harper.

This type of policy is workable, as demonstrated by Sweden and Norway. It fiscally and environmentally sound (when managed carefully and correctly, for which there is precedent). So, for today, I have a dart for Mr. Harper, and a laurel for Mr. Dion.
