...because at the end of the day, pretty much any complaint i have about new york (and they are many) is outweighed by all the great things about living here. but it just defies logic as to how 3 1/2 inches of rain, which given is a lot, and given came down very suddenly, can shut down a public transit system as massive, complex, and old as the new york subway system.
i understand they're underground. i understand they're actually always filling up with and simultaneously pumping out water. i just don't understand how, considering that rain has been around from the beginning of the system's inception, has it not been worked out by now? almost every line in the city today had massive delays, discontinued service, and/or changes in service...i was half an hour late to work. but i had it good. my boss was FOUR HOURS AND FORTY-FIVE MINUTES late to work. and constantly on the move during all of that, via car, bus, and train. and you might think that rain would give relief from the heat, but no, it was like approximately 100% humidity. for me, humidity = sweat = palpable misery.
i mean, it's RAIN.
WATER.
and we live ON AN ISLAND.
island = SURROUNDED BY WATER.
i mean, experts predict that if and when global warming causes the oceans to rise, two of the first places to go are lower manhattan and--you guessed it!---astoria, queens. now that will be a catastrophic problem.
but rain?!
then again, an F2 tornado touched down in brooklyn, the first time that's ever happened ever, so clearly god had it out for us today.
