Well I cast my vote and the results have been depressing in my constituency. As was the actual process. I should count myself lucky - I got to cast my vote and barely had to queue, but the setting was all wrong! When I vote I want to do it in a cavernous and dimly-lit community centre. The booths should be wooden. And old, as should be the pencil, the tatty looking length of string, the ballot box and all the officials. Voting in a setting that looks decidedly pre-war adds to the sense of occasion for me. This time the polling centre was in a minuscule and brightly lit room with plastic booths that offered no privacy. I was underwhelmed.
I took my daughter with me in the faint hope that I could instill some civic responsibility in her and was cheered up immensely when she told me that her imaginary friend had voted. What a proud moment.
