Somebody's gotta do it. When Catholic church bigwigs get together to discuss making someone a saint, one of the cardinals must take the negative side and present the best argument against him or her. This is where the term "devil's advocate" comes from.
Many Red Sox have put up better numbers than Johnny Pesky's. So what are they retiring his number for? Fifty years as, in essence, a mascot.
While I'm glad the team is using the honor as more than just the historical equivalent of an all-star nod, I'm not sure hitting 17 career homers and then hanging around the ballpark a lot should always qualify.
