What do you put on the top of your Christmas tree, if you have one? A star? An angel? A light to warn off passing aircraft?
These days, I don't have a Christmas tree (my flat's too titchy), but when I shared a rented house with friends and we had a communal tree, this is what I made to put on top of it.
Yes, it's Mulder and Scully from The X-Files! I think I made them for Christmas 1996*, although it may have been a year later. In any case, it was back in the days when, in the words of my then-housemate Shelley, "we all spent far too much time thinking about Mulder and Scully". They have loops attached to their backs, so they can be fixed to the top of the tree, although they often drooped slightly by the time the festive season was over. Nonetheless, they were always an excellent conversation piece for visitors, and we continued to use them for every Christmas we lived in that house.
I no longer have any interest in The X-Files, and it's a very long time since I sewed anything larger than a button, but I still have them. I suppose they're a little piece of my own multi-fandom history.
* I've just realized that some of you who are reading this might not have been born when I made these. Blimey, I feel old now...
