I think I'm at peace with the slowing down of bandom. I don't want to talk about it 'dying a natural death'' because I don't think it's dead. It's still going, just... without me. I might read the wave one entries on BBB. I'm going to make art for wave two. But I think that's where it will end, mainly. Who knows, maybe My Chem's new album will drag me back in. But for now, I have my shiny, sparkly new fandom to play in. Ice skating fandom! Yaaaay!
I have come to some moderately alarming realisations regarding this over the past few days:
Nearly my entire fannish participation at the moment consists of refreshing anonmemes. More specifically, three works in progress on the wintergames meme. The frequency at which I have been refreshing them became apparent when I realised they had all ended up on my Most Visited list in my Delicious toolbar. In fact, the Johnny/Evan accidental!marriage fic is my number one most visited fic, even higher than By The Numbers (do you know how many times I have read this fic over the years? It's a lot) and Forever, Now! I understand how I managed that, because those old fics just stay the same and I only load them to reread the stories, whereas here I refresh to look for an update (me being poor and unable to buy a paid account with which to watch threads) every three seconds. But still! Wow!
For reference, the list is currently:
-wedding anonfic
-by the numbers
-bodyswap anonfic
-fovever, now
-our comedies are not to be laughed at
-reevaluate anonfic
-a different kind of love story
-and since we've no place to go
-did you clean those pants with windex? (because I can see myself in them)
Everything there is long loved, digitally dog-eared bandom fic, except for the three ice skating anonmeme fics which have wormed there way in there.
(On the flip side, I wonder how many times I read By The Numbers in order for it to be higher than the Reevaluate fic. I have refreshed that Reevaluate fic on average about 5 times a day for the past 2 weeks. So that's about 70 times. probably more. definitely more. That means I've read By The Numbers more than 70 times? What? I suppose considering I first read it in 2007, which was ....OH MY GOSH 3 YEARS AGO WOW THAT'S SCARY. I was in Bandom for three years? Three and a half? Huh. 70 times makes a bit more sense. Just looking at my Most Visited list brings up the warm fuzzies in my chest. Those fics really hold a special place in my heart.)
I recognise 10 out of the 24 men's figure skaters from the 2010 Olympics. I'm surprised because I basically read about 3 of them (Johnny, Evan and Stephane) with a bit of Plushenko on the side. Don't know how the other 6 managed to slip in. Any this is not even including the women's skaters (although I only really know Kim YuNa and Mirai. Yay tiny Asian skaters!).
The first flush of a new fandom is amazing, as some incredibly lovely people described it: that first flush of a new fandom, when you fall into it and you want to spend every living moment there, so much that when you're away it kind of hurts.
and
I love that stage when I've just discovered a new fandom, or a new pairing, and I can just romp out into the internet and roll around in all the piles of wonderful new stuff. And the first brightness of the shine may wear off (or I may read literally everything there is), but the memory of that moment of unbridled euphoria still makes me warm and fuzzy.
Hooray for people more eloquent than me! That, *points*, is how I feel right now regarding ice-skating fandom. My glee face, let me show you it.
Here are some video links:
http://vimeo.com/10424057 Johnny is elegant and beautiful. In short. *stares*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93oiWIMDIgg Stephane can be elegant too! He dances to Fix You by Coldplay in this which is, disregarding the cheese factor, one of my favourite songs. The moment when he takes off his mask and smiles is just :DDD. Also his little sassy hair flick. &Stephane;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SLpYMcQ1kM&feature=fvw Stephane can do sexy as well! He dances to Gimme More and Sexyback in this one. Again, we shall disregard the cheese. Stephane is naturally a giant cheeseball, and also- he's European. We just have to forgive him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWK05tDBKGI&feature=relatedJust more stuff of Stephane. I think I have a massive, massive platonic crush on him right now. The type where I want to give him hugs and feed him food. And listen to him speak in lots of languages. *sigh*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmf9akrRLGc&feature=fvw Funny Ice Skating Moments from the 2007-08 season. Who is that spazz with the blond hair, Verner? Whoever he is, I love him! I'm trying to find the dance where he's basically doing backstoke on the ice and then flails around like a daddy longlegs spider. It looks awesome, but I am hardly sure of his name, let alone the name of the performance. How do I find it??
This is also one of my problems with being in a new fandom-- all the assumed knowledge! Who is JR? And Apollo?
EDIT: Some research tells me that they are speed skaters from the American Team. Of course.
I was checking out ironicsans.com and I saw
this article. The article was amusing enough, but this comment caught my attention.
If you’re ever out this way, I’ll take you to a coffee shop/dessert place which has 3 trick tables. One rotates ever so slowly, one ascends and descends also at an imperceptible pace, and the other makes a sudden tapping noise at irregular intervals. Not exactly the same thing, but one idea leads to another.
Wouldn't that be cool??? I especially liked the idea of the spinning table-- that you wouldn't notice it moving but at one point you notice the table is pressing into your side and you're sitting at an angle. How did that happen? :D The one that rises up would also produce a similar reaction, except that would be really odd, because you can't blame it on just moving your chair!
OH, OH, HOW COULD I FORGET?
The Most Epic News in the ice skating fandom this month! (I am sort of amused that this is News. On the other hand, it is sort of hilarious.) Evan forgot his pants at home so he BORROWED JOHNNY'S. He borrowed his ~*ARCH RIVAL'S*~ pants for a performance. WHAT. When asked why he forgot, he said he was tired. And also that the pants were kind of short and tight. Well of course, they're Johnny's. Johnny, who is like, a HEAD shorter than you. Oh Evan. I don't know when I started to find him endearing instead of douchey. &his tangerine face;
