12) Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey
As usual, Carey's prose is beautiful. This is the story of Loup, a girl whose father is a man who was genetically altered. I loved this story. Lou doesn't feel fear, which could have alienated her from the reader if it wasn't handled right - but it was. I liked that the love interest wasn't who you'd (or I would have) expect. The story of Loup's life was dolled out with perfect pacing, never lagging or jumping around too much. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the secondary characters, from the priest-who-wasn't-a-priest to the prickly Miguel. It's ends conclusively but there's still room for more within the plot. I'm very interested to know what comes next (if, in fact, there are more books of this sort on the way). As it is, I'll have to comfort myself (aka, I'm counting down the days until I'm stateside and able to buy books and read them immediately) with Naamah's Kiss. 8/10
In other news, I have a VERY productive day today - to the tune of roughly 5k words. I finally got to one of my so-called "candy scenes" where we re-meet the tasty Jake. His costume is Adonis if that gives you any clue. He always complicates things in interesting ways because my MC, Devon, is drawn to him against her will - and she totally blames him for a few things that happen in the first book. What can I say? I love drama!
