(In Spanish, "andar de pata de perro" or "to walk like a dog's leg" means to wander hither and thither or take a crazy jaunt)
Greetings from Veracruz! First impressions of this Gulf Coast city: sultry, friendly, elegantly shabby, graceful, lyrical, unpretentious. And the food is outstanding.
Have you ever really traveled alone? I got a taste of it after Micah, Rachel and Brennan left but that was really only the tail-end of a longer trip. This time I just up and left, all by myself. Zero itinerary, just my customary high travel stamina and bewilderment - cum - childlike enthusiasm. There's something decadent about it, something delicious.
The shithole I'm staying in, for example. It's not really a shithole I guess. It's in the middle of the historic district and is evidently undergoing some major renovations is the thing. My room has a vast bed, still with reassuring crinkly wrapping on the mattress, and a fan to more effectively breathe the hot air back on me. My window has no curtains. The cockroaches are both agile and gregarious. All reasons t his is the cheapest bed in Veracruz right now. I may change locales tomorrow night. Maybe not.
My point being that these travel circumstances would likely have been 79 - 100% unacceptable to anyone but me. Whereas I am loving the prospect of having this flea-bitten beauty of a city all to myself for the next couple of days.
Pictures are coming, I swear it. I just forgot my USB cable is all.
