Why RL and fandom are sometimes a bad mix

I'm in Chicago with intricate_life and fannyt. It is generally made of awesome. Except tonight, it managed to quite effectively kill two fandom characters as far as I'm concerned. Or, kill one, change another, rather. Long story short, we went to see an acoustic set with Jon and William Beckett (+ some other people). Opening act was pretty great. Very much liked them + their drummer really went all out. Always appreciate that. :) Then came Jon. And put me to sleep. Twice. He looked pretty hot, which, sadly, is the only positive thing I can say about his set. Music was beyond boring, except for two Young Veins songs, which merely fell flat due to lack of a band. Not only boring, but depressing as hell and performed with what I'd like to describe as negative stage presence. Or maybe that's a bit harsh. Zero stage presence maybe. Basically, he reminded me forcefully of some of the guys in the art program in high school who thought they were ironic and deep and who we were all forced to sit and listen to during end-of-year ceremonies. And this is all a bit problematic because while I never had much interest in Jon as a fictional character and was quite happy to just go along with the flip flop-wearing mellow dude for writing purposes, I now feel mostly "meh". And since fictional!Jon barely has any depth to start with (in my experience with reading and writing him), this feels pretty fatal to my ability to write him. Which sucks. Have to figure out how I'm going to work around that for CSI. *sigh*

The other thing was William Beckett, who came on stage looking like the spitting image of a young Robert Sean Leonard and proceded to rocking his set with humour and lots of boyish charm. Which was very good and attractive, but very, very far from the fictional character known as slutty!Bill that we (I) all know and love. Since I don't really write fictional!Beckett in any other sense than as a fringe character when I need someone a) slutty b) slightly disturbing c) made of awesome, I think the two will be able to co-exist in my brain just fine, though.

God, fandom does such weird things in your brain sometimes. *shakes head*
Right. Sleep. Good idea. :)
