Well, I started my new internship Thurs. It's not so much as a new thing though since I just got done with my old one last week, but still...I needed the week vacation.

So anyhow, being that Yates has 9th graders for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and uses 1st period for big projects, he decided that he needed student managers to take care of everything else throughout the day. So he did this little application thingy for the kids that wanted to apply for the positions, reviewed their grades from middle school, and picked the top few. Well, 5 to be precise. So, he went through "THE RUNDOWN" (I just think that looks funny hehe) really quick with them yesterday after school. Of course, taking a two hour job and showing you how to do it in 45 mins doesn't work very well, but maybe I'm just being picky.

So today I got a chance to talk to them all one-on-one (3 in second, 1 in third, and 1 in fourth) and I must say, I am very impressed with them. Sure they have a lot to learn, but they all have tremendous potential. Self motivated, smart, willingness to learn, good attitude, ambitious...how crazy is it to see not one, not two, but five freshman like that? heck yeah!

So since they are going to be doing the general maintenance stuff throughout the day, that frees me up to work on other projects and actual spawning. Plus, since Yates is in class with all the other students, I get free reign to train them! How cool is that? An actual chance to work on teaching skills without all the extra hassle. So yeah, they will be getting all the hands on skills from actually doing the stuff, but they will be missing the class room stuff. Knowing how to do something is indeed important, but knowing why you do something is just as important. They all want to go to college and do marine biology and similar things, so it's not like they are just going to be working at a fish farm forever or something like that. So since I get to be in charge of them, I think I will give them little lab assignments to do and what not. Not like book work. Just projects that will emphasize something. That way they will have the best of both worlds. Of course they may hate me for it, but eh...I know feeding fish and sucking fish poo gets somewhat repetitive and boring after the first week or so. Besides, we aren't teaching them properly if they come out just learning that.

Well, I'm going to consider this my real first experience teaching (I mean, giving a lecture, showing someone how to do something, etc. is a little different than actually deciding what someone is going to learn, when they will learn it, and how they will learn it...).

Yates had mentioned that he wants to take some time off (just like a month or so) because he has been run ragged. He jokingly said that I could take over while he's gone, but it was more like a hint you laugh about to see if someone is interested then an actual joke. I'm kinda embarrassed, because I freaked out a little bit. Why? Well, in all actuality, I could take the spot. A teacher can ask for a specific substitute teacher if they are available and you only have to be 18 and have your HS degree to be a sub. So, I could technically sign up to be a sub, and take the spot for Yates while he took a month off. To be honest, I'm not sure if I would be willing to do that. That's a lot of responsibility, and I'm not sure if I'm ready to have complete control yet. Maybe a sub, and I'll just come to help out? I could do that. But I'm a little timid to do the whole thing. We'll see though...I mean, that would be a great opportunity to try out my plan career path- exactly. And I am a big advocate of taking all the chances you have and the risks that come with them. Of course, I don't want to be in way over my head either. Hmmmm Oh well, I'll have to see if he really decided to take a month off first.
