The drive home was much shorter than the drive out. We only stopped to
sleep a couple times at rest areas, and for gas. We left Friday morning at
around 10 am and arrived in Eugene at 8pm on sunday night.
We drove from Atlanta north through tennessee and kentucky into missouri.
We hit saint louis MO before sunset, and got almost to Kansas City by the
time we went to bed. Saturday morning we woke up at like,
4 am and started driving. We stopped in Lawrence KS for coffee, a cute
little town. We found this great coffee shop that was open 24 hours and was
the only place open at that time, except for a bunch of barbar shops, and
old men were in there getting their hair cut, which we thought was odd.
This was at 6 am. The cafe was just the kind of place I'd like to spend
lots of time in. In fact, it was much like the place we were talking about
opening. They had tons of comfy chairs and extra little rooms and all these
bookshelves full of old books. Good graffitti in the bathroom too. Anyway,
Kansas was long and hot and otherwise uneventful;. I think it was 106
degrees, were heard on the radio. We passed into Colorado, and headed north
at Denver. Then we hit Wyoming which was pretty and it cooled down. It got
VERY windy, and I saw a buffalo. We arrived in Utah and slept outside of
Ogden (near SLC) around midnight. Waking up at 6 am, we moved on, entering
Idaho and then eastern Oregon. Nice mountain pass there, then lots of
desert, then the gorge! The gorge was quite nice. We pulled over to see
the Multnomah falls, then drove through Portland and to Eugene by sunset.
Whew, we were tired and dirty! We lost 3 hours in the time changes and
hadn't slept much on the way home, so we took showers, ate, and were asleep
by 9:30.
When I drove through Portland, and passed it, I felt distinctly sad that it wasn't my destination.
