Leaving Tuxtepec today my Aunt and I rode in a fancy taxi to the bus station. On the outside it was your basic small, sedan taxi but on the inside it had an excessive sound system, a tv on the dash playing music videos to accompany each "jam" the driver was pumping out, a super wide rear view mirror etc.
Had a relatively painless, 7 hour bus ride to Mexico City then another cab ride and we finally arrived at my aunts home. With quickly plummeting glucose levels we made way for the kitchen. Vegetable soup, salad and potatoes; finally some variety from the black beans, corn tortillas and papaya Id essentially been surviving off the last 4 days. Even though they know Im veg, I still ask if the veggie soup is made with chicken broth because omnivores have a tendency to forget such details. Its chicken free and I dig in and not until about halfway through the bowl do I come across something a little too chewy, BACON! To which they responded like, oops we forgot thats how we do it. How does shit like this just slip peoples minds, "Oh yeah, I totally forgot that we ALWAYS put bacon in our veggie soup" I dont say much and move on to the salad which was great.
Im having a really good time, but 6 days with family in a non-vegan friendly environment is too much. Initially the plan was to go to Austin to see my Moms new home, hang out with my sister and explore Austin, Ive never been. The plans changed because my Great Uncle, Carlos Illana Ahuja, was being honored for being such an awesome Mayor in Tuxtepec back in the 70s. He paved the then dirt roads and built schools, woo! Also, because of the last minute change of plans, and the cost of flying to Mexico, my mom bought the ticket, wow!
I honestly didnt feel too weird surviving off beans, tortillas and fruit, but my family expressed some concern. Certain family members really stepped it up and would go out of their way to find steamed veggies or salad for me and I really, TRULY appreciated their efforts to help me instead of criticizing my morals. Really though, I think it was made difficult mainly by the fact that we were in such a small town BUT lesson learned...next time instead of packing ultra light and bringing just my messenger bag for the week, Ill check a suitcase full of green vibrance, larabars, nuts, primal strips, mori nu tofu, almond milk and other shelf stable, customs friendly, vegan delights.
