So I thought I'd take a break from all my wangsty posts (sorry about that) to post something vastly more important:
Namely, are all Doctor Who fanvids really set to Snow Patrol, or is it just a running joke?
I see the joke about Snow Patrol and Ten all the time, and it always makes me laugh, because all the vids are always so overdramatic and angsty and so very him. I mean, really, who can't picture Ten listening to Snow Patrol? I figured their love was meant to be and that all of fandom must agree on this.
So I decided to "investigate" this important subject through the vastly scientifically accurate method of typing word phrases (using quotes) into youtube and seeing the number of resulting hits. (And of course, completely ignoring the fact that not all the hits are going to be fanvids.)
My benchmark was going to be Buffy fanvids set to Evanescence, which is what I completely randomly estimate 80% of the terrible Buffy fanvids were set to back when I was really into Buffy.
It turns out that approximately 5% of Buffy hits on youtube involve Evanescence. However, only about 1% of the "Doctor Who" hits involved "Snow Patrol".
Hits for:
"Buffy"- 13,000-----------------------w/ "Evanescence"- 643
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer"- 9,040-----w/ "Evanescence"- 519
"Doctor Who"- 27,400------------------w/ "Snow Patrol"- 365
This made me sad. Did the rest of the world not see the deep connection between the two? I thought I'd do a few more searches to see if maybe there just weren't many Doctor Who fanvids in general. So I picked some common popular angsty vidding bands and some random top 10 artists...
Hits for "Doctor Who" with:
"Lady Gaga"- 633
"Katy Perry"- 544
Evanescence- 511
Coldplay- 393
"Linkin Park"- 354
"Britney Spears"- 314
Rihanna- 301
Lil Wayne 52
Nicki Minaj- 29
Jay-Z- 24
This proved rather definitively that there isn't an overabundance of Snow Patrol fanvids. Boo, I said. But was there maybe something I was missing? It turns out I was. The missing factor, as it so often is, was ROSE. Add "Rose" in there along with "Snow Patrol" and you still get 189 hits, which is about 52% of the "Snow Patrol" hits on their own. Try that with any other band and the results are much, much lower- Lady Gaga, at 96, is only 15%. So while there may not be an abundance of Snow Patrol vids, the ones that are out there are disproportionately high in ROSE.
In conclusion, Snow Patrol is what the TARDIS plays for Ten as he's crying into Rose's New Earth shirt every weekend. Martha of course, cranks up her stereo to drown out his sobs as she's studying her med school books in her room. I also like to think the TARDIS brings poor Martha cupcakes.
