Last night I finally saw Inception with
sohotrightnow and
inlovewithnight, which is good because ever since I finally cut on my flist, Inception seems to be everywhere and I had no idea what anyone was talking about and I don't like feeling left out. :(

I liked it. I maybe liked it more than I expected to, given that there was so much hype and I usually expect to be disappointed by things that have been talked up that much. It really was very well done. It's not something I see myself developing any real fannish affection for, but I see where it is appealing to the fannish impulse. It's saying some really compelling things not only about reality, but also about narrative and storytelling and there's so much room there, and so many possible readings, with the canon itself so clearly up for debate - and there is no "right" answer about what the canon even means, which is really interesting.

If I were going to read fic about it, that's what I would want, I think. Lots of stuff that plays with the world building and with what reality even means and how much believing in it matters, how much it's constructed by what we choose to believe - and also about the morality/ethics/sketchiness/consequences of the very idea of inception, which the movie touches, but doesn't dwell on. I connected less to the characters than I did to plot and I connected less to the plot than I did to the meta level, which I think is why it probably can't turn into a fannish thing for me, but I did find it fascinating.

I'm almost completely uninterested in anything shippy in it; it just isn't that kind of text for me. Both Cobb/Mal and Cobb/Saito piqued my interest, but only in that I found them the most interesting to use as lenses for exploring the world - people trapped in different versions of limbo together, subconsciously shaping their realities. Also, I would read pretty much any fic about Ariadne, I think, as long as it was focused on her relentless curiosity and all the places that could take her - places she might not want to go, but has to because she has to know.

I will say I am just a little bit baffled as to how
sohotrightnow and I got through six pages of the kinkmeme last night looking for Cobb/Saito before we gave up in defeat. They were, like, set up to parallel Cobb/Mal. I actually don't really know *why* and I would have to watch the movie again to really parse what I think was going on there because it was mostly weird, but it was very much *there.* Mal and Cobb were going to grow old together! Saito and Cobb were going to be young men together! Cobb was at different points trapped in limbo with both of them, had to save them both from it. Symmetry! I love symmetry. Where is the fic? :(
