sparkledammerung

When I moved here and I was complaining about the potential weather everybody kept saying to me "but at least you'll be somewhere that has seasons" like that was a good thing. DNW seasons unless the season in question is summer. Today we had icy winds and some kind of horrid precipitation that was almost-but-not-quite snow. By February I'm going to want to die.

Anyway, tonight we covered ourselves in body glitter, smuggled a flask into the theater and went to see that Twilight movie. Enough recaps of hilarity are going to pop up on the internet that I don't feel the need to go into detail, but I will say that it was everything I hoped for as far as living up to my expectations of ridiculousness. My favorite part was the sparkling; it was rendered musically as well as visually, and that made the scene, I think. Also, the extent and type of audience participation proved that we were not the only ones there for ironic purposes; there were a lot of people laughing at the more ridiculous moments. (Edward and Bella's first meeting? LOL.)

The other thing it was, though, was really discomfiting to watch. I was uncomfortable with Edward and Bella's relationship in the book, but the visuals made it worse for me - his constant warnings that he wants to hurt her and she should stay away because he doesn't know if he can control himself, the physical displays of strength to prove to her how dangerous he is, her blind trust him and willingness to give up everything for him to the point where she doesn't regret their meeting even when she thinks she's going to her death, the vehemence of her reaction at the end when she's insisting she can't live without him and is panicked at the thought she might have to . . . it reads so unhealthy/abusive. It read that way in the book, but in the movie, laid out visually without the filter of Bella-as-constant-narrator, I found it even more disturbing. The idea of this relationship being held up as any kind of romantic ideal really, really bothers me. The casting was perfect; Pattinson was incredibly charming in the role some of the time - when he wasn't being a total creepy stalker, but you're not supposed to look at Edward and see "creepy stalker" (though clearly Pattinson does from his interviews; he is my new favorite) and that's really a problem.

We went to the movie expecting it would be amusing like the book was, unintentionally hilarious, yet engaging - and it was; the recaps are going to be funny, but I didn't expect to be quite so unsettled.

Anyway, so other people's accounts of their Twilight experiences are going to be funnier than mine. Sorry about that. The question now is: do I want to read the rest of the books to see for myself or do I just want to trust the recaps of the people who have already endured it so I don't have to?
