the velocitators had a very successful show at a biker bar tonight. i had a great but weird time.
at first i zipped my jacket up and told dave to put his arm around me cause they were hitting on me. the food was bad and the music was loud and most ppl were drinking budweiser or rolling rock. but then dave's old crew from when we were first dating were there, who i never met. and the bar loved them, and his friends said they could get him more gigs where they will be appreciated.
and then i spent a long time talking alone to this violent paranoid drunk who loved them. when he would get paranoid and say, "i'm not comfortable with this. people dont like talking to me. why are you talking to me?" i would alternate between, "well, i hang out with this girl with tattoos lately [sq] who makes me hang out with people i'm not comfortable with, and i have a good time. and i like talking to you." and "well, i like talking to people, listening to people. and you arent hitting on me. if you made a move i'd leave. i'm having a good time talking to you."
its certainly not how i thought the evening would go. him alternating between threatening people for me and talking about having beaten people up, taken drugs and possibly gone to prison and profound things that i deal with, like why people are difficult and dont listen and how you can feel like yourself but still make yourself heard. how do you deal with the fact that no one understands what you have been through, how you see the world, what you are trying to say? (his choice is to be alone and fuck em, but he agrees its hard.)
there were lots of great gems like "i was sober for three years. good things happened to me." "i dont like n words. but i'm not racist. i hate everybody." "dont worry about getting kicked out of places. i get kicked out of lots of places. you dont want to play in places like that. fuck em!" "i hate all the people in this bar! fuck you all!" there was also, "you are so beautiful. the way you look at me. you are listening to me." "i can see you understand because you've been there too."
apparently biker bars are a good place for the velocitators to perform. but not the 20 something hipster band that was playing later, towards whom much of the threats were aimed. ("he looks like a nazi kraut." [a guy with a fake hitler moustache.] "i'm going to beat the guy with the suspenders up. and the fag next to him." "do you want his sunglasses? [no i think he wants them] no really. do you want them? he's going to lose them soon.") perhaps i should have watched out for those kids but it was time to leave. there was also a lot of threatening to unplug or beat up the next musician but i told them no, leave him alone he's a friend.
also, note to self, wear fat jeans next time not sweater dresses and leggings. of course with arnie's gigs, you never know what you are going to get. last time it was a full on old timey folk place.
