Rec: DCU

There is a great deal of talk about DCU under the cut, along with a number of recs. (6 Clark/Bruce, 1 Bruce/Dick, 2 Jim/Bruce)

Sometimes I wonder about my sanity.

I do this thing, right, where I will save up a fandom or a genre just so I'll have reading material for later. (No really I do. Thus far I refuse to read any novel that falls in the genre of crime because I know there's good crime stuff out there (my mother has recommended a lot), and I want to have it there to read in a few years.)

As far as fandoms are concerned, this mostly applies to anything that falls under the headings of Due South, Sentinal, NCSI, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Highlander, and any and all Bandom. Possibly there are more, but I can't think of them at the moment. I think the reason they're on my list is a combination of their age - that is, they are all older fandoms, that I'm drawn to because of their canon and their characters, but which I don't know well enough to want to pursue yet. (This list is totally different from my list of things I will never pursue which is very strange and includes sg:1 and bsg as the most prominent examples).

I know I do this, partly because every so often I break down and incorporate one of these fandoms in my normal reading. Often with mixed results. Recently I broke down (due to some recs that came my way) and started reading DCU. This was both awesome... and not.
There is a lot of great DCU fiction out there. It is wonderful, I love it. I find myself drawn to many of the possible pairings and I have a terrible weakness for Superman!fic that is probably a holdover from the Smallville days.

So I started out in a normal manner with superman fic - mainly based around the movie Superman Returns.
That is, I started with Bruce/Clark fic of the best sort. Thanks to several recs by the lovely amothea I discovered mithen who wrote the amazing Music of the Sphere's and the even more amazing (in my mind, at least) Leap of Faith. Then I wandered into daunting territory and managed to get myself caught up in her wip The Garden's of Wayne Manor which was thankfully finished recently. (I don't, as a matter of course read wips. And if I do, it's only ever by mistake. I thought it was finished!)
And, just because it is very pretty, there is also this which is a very much NSFW, picture of Clark and Bruce lounging in mid-air. I was honestly sceptical about all the sex in mid-air, until I saw this. There were all these fic that would talk of them having sex, or at least heavy groping, while Clark was flying, and I couldn't help but think it would look ridiculous. For one, dangling feet are never attractive, and what else are you supposed to do with feet while you fly? But rai_daydreamer succeeded at the impossible and managed to make it hot. Somehow.
More amazing fic came my way by courtesy of dizmo who wrote an amazingly original work by the name of Good Men. Amazing, not only because it was brilliantly written, but also because it was done in a manner I've never seen before. This fic is written as though dizmo  was writing real person fiction involving the very prominent public figures of Superman and Batman, with cameos by Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent (who really do seem to get caught up in an awful lot of superhero shenanigans). I finished it and couldn't help but start imagining other fic that could be written in the same manner (I had to stop myself when I started thinking of Harry Potter fic written by snotty nosed teens crushing on him after the war... because that fic already exists and was my main motivation for leaving The Pit behind.) But still, amazing idea and brilliantly executed.
Then I stumbled across the most shamefully unfinished and yet still amazing Untitled Identity Porn by Alis Dee (again I thought it was finished. Again I was wrong.) I think the title says it all here. This fic pretty much hit all my buttons, because if there's one thing I love it's fic about misunderstanding and secrets. And of all the fic I read where the superheroe's secret identity was the main motivator? This was leagues ahead of the rest. So, as I said, it's a crying shame it's unfinished.
Then I started branching out. I decided I'd get a little bit adventurous, and thought I'd get to know the Bat!family a little. This was my first mistake. My second was deciding to stick with what I knew for a short while and to read some Nolan!verse before reading other things.
I started out pretty normally. If any pairing in DCU can be counted as normal.

I read the Bruce Wayne/Dick Grason fic Ties That Bind by thehoyden which was amazing and wonderful and does not in any way explain my next move...
...See, the next fic I read was the absolutely fantastic Bird of Prey by jane_potter which I've already recc'd here (because it is just that awesome). Having read Bird of Prey, and being totally converted to the idea of Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne being soul-mates (of a dysfunctional, emotionally co-dependant sort) I went trawling the webs for more. Which I found in the form of the amazing fiction by noelia_g . Every one of her Jim/Bruce fics deserves a mention, but perhaps the most satisfying was the Groundverse series which had Bruce Wayne trying to help Jim's family after Barbara's death and falling in love with Jim along the way.
I've just finished the last of noelia_g 's work which I've been stretching out over the last two weeks or so. And each and every fic was brilliant right up the last word.
Now I'm wondering which character I'll pursue next. I'm thinking maybe Dick Grayson, but who knows?

This fandom is such a large sprawling entity with so much canon to draw from I hardly even know where to begin. But I'm enjoying myself. Even as I fear for my sanity :)
