Sick & garden planning

Well, stayed home sick today. I am not 100% hacking-ready-to-die sick but knew if I went in I'd be pushing myself. I'm feeling better for the nap & warm lemon & honey & ginger drinks & the hours spent just lying in bed with warm flannel sheets & a good book. I've been chewing vitamin C a lot the last few days as well as echinacea, garlic & zinc tabs.

I emailed Pratty's about the small cast iron teapot I have my eye on & that is out of stock. They have great customer service & I got an email to say that they'll contact their supplier & let me know. If it is soon I'll get the one I want. If it isn't going to be in soon then I'll get a new porcelain like the one I broke.

I was perusing the seed catalog tonight. I have my eye on carrot seeds, basil & coriander if I am out (haven't checked the shed) & some flowers. I think I've got enough tomato seeds from last year still. The company I like has a couple flower mixes I a considering. one is a bees/polinators mix & the other is a beneficial insects mix. They also have a native wildflower called "Hibiscus Flower of an Hour" that sounds like it would be a great border plant, maybe one to try to put out front where there are a lot of weeds. Down side to that would be that the neighborhood kids have just about destroyed our flowering plants in the past. I would like it to look nicer but when the kids strip the plants & throw litter around then I get a big "why bother" attitude. But I would like something nice out there (still tempted to plant nettles....)

I'm not sure on the carrot variety yet, I have 2 heirloom possibilities & I might go with both. It has been at least a season, probably closer to 2, since I've grown them. I like the look of the Nutri Red (25cm long?!) & the Touchon. I have grown baby carrots before but think I'll use my old potato bags for these longer carrot varieties.

Winter has been mild temperature-wise. We still have maybe 2 months to spring & have only had a frost or 2. We've had plenty of rain though. I've killed 2 mosquitoes in the last few weeks (1 tonight!!) & our roses are still putting out the odd flower. Our cherry tree has flowers on it & the peach & nectarine have leaf buds on the fresh growth. All of it too early!! It will be interesting to see what kind of summer we get.

That is about me. The tv show I'm watching about a small Christian community here in NZ will be over soon & then I'm to bed for back to work. It is interesting, done pretty well without an agenda to show it as a cult or as a perfect community. This isn't my kind of thing but I respect that it is theirs. And to their credit, the community sustains themselves instead of expecting the government to carry them. They also showed a concert that they put on for the local (outside) community, where they can talk to the outsiders & vice versa. It is basically a commune. Like I said, not my thing.

Tomorrow is Friday so I'll try to go in. We are going to be really busy & I've got Mon off already. I want to tidy stuff up for the person who's region I've been looking after & want to get a few things done before I've got a day off.
