I took advantage of the last of the autumn sun this morning to head out to the range. 2nd time this week! Overall I did better than when I went a few days ago, but did manage to munt one of my arrows by accidentally shooting it straight into the shaft of another. It was a typical "Robin Hood" type shot and completely, purely accidentally. There sure as heck wasn't any skill in it!
I need to get better at my form, that was clear today, although I am improving. But more so I need to start to work on my aiming techniques. For those of you who don't know or who don't remember, I shoot "bare bow"--no sight. I had one (still have it) but tended to shoot worse with it than without so went back to bare bow instinctive shooting. I did work my way out to about 20 feet, mostly have been shooting the approx 6 feet & 15 feet targets lately just so I can work on the basics instead of spending all my range time trying to find lost arrows.
I have next week off and while it's Easter (so the range will be a bit busier I suspect on Good Friday & Easter Monday), I hope to get back out there at least once if not twice more. We've got someone due to come to fix our floors this coming Monday (ie--in a few days) so that is one day out from shooting. Weather packed up today and we are due for the rain to carry through to at least Monday anyway so we'll see how that plays into my chance to get to the range.
Onto some pictures!
Here is the best of my close-up (apx 6 ft) bunny shots
And here's what not to do, shooting one arrow into another. I will probably be able to use the back arrow, the front arrow may be ok if I have room for them to remove the split nock & to trim the expanded/broken shaft bit. That will be way down the line when the budget allows me to repair it & to get a few more arrows to boost my quiver. (I had 8 total, now down to 7).
Here are my first shots at about 15 feet, down to 4 arrow as I only had 6 in my quiver & I hadn't wanted to shoot the 2 I'd shot into each other until I'd been in touch with the shop I get them from to be sure it was still safe to shoot them as the carbon fibers can 'explode' if you shoot them when they are broken even if the arrow looks good.
Here are my best shots at about 15 feet (they went downhill the next set after this)
And here is my first set of shots at the 20 feet turkey (it was either turkey or ferret/weasel & I couldn't bring myself to shoot the ferret/weasel target as I was thinking of Herlander_Refugee when I saw them). Hey, I still would have had at least 1 turkey dinner out of this!
And here is my best set of shots at the 20 foot turkey. That would have gotten me several meals!
I was about to get about 45 minutes of shooting in before it started raining & we made it home just before it really started pouring down. We had scattered showers predicted for today so I'm glad I got some shooting in before they hit.
And because the company brought it out, it sounded tasty, to reward me for doing some heavy work around the house in prep for the floor guys coming & since I've been shooting paper bunnies (and any other reason we could make up) we pooled our lunch money & bought one of the local pizza company's smoked wild rabbit pizza. Rabbits are a major pest here, especially in the South Island. The country-wide chain I think hired some hunters (or bought the rabbit meat from them) who were culling them & have put together a very tasty pizza. Their rabbit-skin billboard advertising campaign is a bit edgy & has some people up in arms, but it is interesting to read some of the feed back on Facebook from these people. Some are just "you are disgusting/boycotting you" but others say why they are upset & that is interesting to read their views.
So here is the Easter card we got with the pizza. I thought it was cool.
Here's the inside which tells you what was on the pizza. We took off the beetroot & horopito relish, we aren't into spicey things. I also put some of the cranberry sauce we picked up for our wedges onto the pizza and that really made it extra nice!
