We have had a really nice run of weather this weekend. It has been sunny and warm. I hit the garden centre and picked up a few things so I could enjoy the sun. I've spent 4 or 5 hours out there this weekend. I picked up some pea straw to try as mulch to keep moisture in. It is supposed to be good for the soil, keeps moisture in, helps build soil micro-organisms & slowly breaks down to release the nitrogen and other nutrients. When I put normal compost on the pots the birds and ducks just dig it out and dump it on the ground. I hope that the ore interlocked structure of the straw will keep the birds from decimating it quite as much.
So I've spent the weekend soaking the straw in water, weeding & watering the pots & spreading the straw around the plants. It has been nice to just potter for awhile. Most of my tomatoes are doing ok, but the Big Rainbow seedlings didn't survive the early planting so I've got more seeds planted (only 1 survived). The squash is coming up gang-busters but the watermelon is taking forever. I've replanted more seeds for those as well as the cucumbers since those haven't come up.
I was going to post more but I'm fading fast so this is a short one.
