One Card Draw, Protest Songs & Another Generation Protesting

Jun 02, 2012 07:55

ariestess is holding a One Card Draw today, ending at 4:15pm PDT. It's free but you can tip via Paypal, with tips bringing special perks (extra cards, etc). Check it out and share it!

I'm up earlier than my usual weekend time & listening to Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom". I am considering getting . It's a 50th birthday tribute to Bob and to Amnesty International with I believe some of the funds going to Amnesty International. The MP3 download is about $18US and there are 73 Bob Dylan songs covered by an amazingly diverse group of well=known and not-so-well-known musicians. The CD version doesn't have as many songs so I'm eyeing the MP3 version for it's diversity. I've just ordered a different Viking knit tool, a thicker one that will give me some more variety, and a book by the woman who makes both of the tools to give me some more ideas on how to create nicer pieces I can sell. I am finishing paying off the cards from the trip so I can't really afford to just buy what I want, I'll need to hold off on the music until either I sell something else at Craftworld or until I've paid the cards and put some time between my purchases.

I worked late last night, we're on the 14th floor of a building that overlooks one of the main streets in Auckland. It's one that people parade and protest down. Last night someone mentioned there was something going on the street so I went over to a window and took a look while we were trying to figure out what was happening. I didn't say anything but almost made a crack that John Key was in the government, of course it was a protest. Turns out I was right- students were protesting some of the changes in the government's new budget to education. Yeah, John Key comes in and raises sales tax, cuts income tax and then when there's a shortfall cuts social services and raises class sizes and put teachers on "performance" pay. I know how performance pay works in the corporate world--you work your ass off, do extra stuff but then get told that there isn't enough money for everyone who did a good job to get a bonus so the people who "did the most" get the highest bonus and some who still worked their asses off to cover the work of the people who "did the most" don't get anything.

Well, time to eat some breakfast and get some chores done. I'm up early, maybe if I get a jump on some of the chores I can go through some of my photos.

Be well.
