kids these days don't know about the jazz

My literary criticism professor is one of the most entertaining personalities I have ever met. A large part of the class' subject matter concerns itself with the influence that the arts have on real life ("life imitates art" and all that). So naturally the concept of archetypes and stereotypes in fiction often comes up. In addition to that, we often talk about Plato and his concerns about the effect that art has on people. The greatest part about all this is that the professor is like your stereotypical Grumpy Old Man, but it's done in such a charming manner that you can't help but like him. It's like he's a character actor or something, it's hiliarious to watch. He even has his own catchphrases and stuff. ("Hell-O!" "Go to hell!") I have to restrain myself from laughing even when he's not going out of his way to be funny. But there are times when it seems like he's consciously playing up the grumpy old guy persona and the whole class just cracks up.

"Have you ever read this poem by T.S. Elliot??? Nobody? HELLO! What the hell are you people doing with your lives?"

"I like watching cinema...I mean, *REAL* cinema, not that Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie bebop drama garbage that you people like to watch"

"It used to be that a book would become famous through its merit. Now the only famous books are the trash promoted on the god damned Oprah show!"

I'm an English major, but I've come to hate literature so most classes are completely tedious and boring for me...But even though I don't care about most of the actual content I rarely miss this class, because it's just so amusing.
