A big thank you and an update

Sep 30, 2008 08:49

To all the folks that came to the party on Saturday, I'd like to extend a big thank you. With the events of last week I was feeling down. Seeing friends and getting to hang out and talk and eat raised my spirits immensely.

To those that couldn't come - well ya all missed some excellent food, drink and good times. Frozen Bourbon sours rule!

I though I would let folks know what is going on. As of Wednesday, September 24th I was notified that my contract would not be renewed for fiscal 2009. In other words July 1st of 2009 I will be let go.

In the mean time while I am still technically hired and getting paid. I have no access, no privileges, no permissions to do anything. I spoke with my manager yesterday and the upshot is that basically I can spend the next 9 months "telecommuting" doing - nothing - maybe some make work if I really want to.

I will do the dance with the HR department and get "job counseling". I am trying to balance the fight-or-flight urge of "MUST FIND NEW JOB NOW" and the depression urge of "Why Bother?" I know I have time.

It all feels a bit weird. I'd like to get another job at the university and continue on there. It's galling to see the provost crowing about best semester yet when some of the folks that made it possible are being let go.

In gaming news I've been playing Warhammer online and having a blast with it - it is hands down the *PRETTIEST* game I have ever played. The art department for Mythic deserves a lot of credit for pulling and putting together influences from Brothers Hildebrant, Duer, the old Masters, a bit of HR Giger, and a whole host of other artists. There are places in the game that I would gladly print and frame on my wall.

party, life, gaming
