Prompt #230: Black and White

May 15, 2008 21:07

I have never subscribed to the idea of dichotomous thinking in regards to morality.

I shall allow you all a moment to absorb the shock I am sure shall follow that particular statement.

I do not understand thinking in such absolutes, which was likely why I was never able to follow Apocalypse's "logic" (please note the ironic use of quotation marks) to its fullest. Certainly there are those who are weak, and those who are strong. Apocalypse was always searching for some way to correctly and neatly (ofttimes, not-so-neatly) identify which was which. He dreamt of a world inhabited by only the strongest of citizens.

Which is ridiculous for a number of reasons. The strongest of us have our weaknesses and the more--shall we say, fragile--among us have moments of tremendous strength in the correct circumstances. People, be they mutants or human, have strengths and weaknesses both. It forever irritated me that Apocalypse refused to see this. Strength-wise, the man could move mountains. Mentally, however, he could be quite easy to overpower.

(I would have beat him at chess each time we played; I was, however, not an idiot. I always let him win and then pretended I had not.)

This is one reason why I never took to Magnus' theory that mutants were more intelligent than humans and therefore more deserving of the rule of the planet, or whatever he was on about. (Please notice Magnus' rather frightening similarity to Apocalypse in this regard). My Isobel is as brilliant as any member of homo superior. And I have met many mutants without the mental capacity to beat a toddler at a game of dice. Intelligence is a strenght all its own and has little to do with physical features or abilities. Apocalypse never did seem to grasp that concept.

The world is much more interesting if one chooses to view it in shades of grey. The possibilities are so much greater. Endless, in fact.

By the bye, if you ever find yourself at a chessboard with Ehn Sabah Nur, he is particularly susceptible to the four-move checkmate. You may use that knowledge at your discretion.
