...whores?
Old news, I know, but... back when Sin City came out, a lot of people (okay, mostly guys) were excusing the sexism because it was based on "film noir." At the time, I thought "...it's been a while since I've watched 'The Maltese Falcon', but I don't remember there being a lot of whores in it."
I spent a good portion of today watching film noir movies with my brother and I gotta say, I'm still noticing a distinct lack of whores. In fact, most of the women are pretty kickass- not completely unproblematic, but frankly, for movies made in the forties and fifties, they do pretty well. Granted, I haven't actually seen/read Sin City, so perhaps I'm wrong, but what I read and heard about the women seemed a far cry from the femme fatales favored by the genre.
...is there maybe some entirely different kind of film noir I'm unfamiliar with that is, in fact, full of whores?
