One of the things I try to do is save my reading/viewing of fanworks for early in the morning (or reeeeally late at night), because, for some reason, I leave MUCH better feedback at those times. Maybe it's the loss of distraction, or maybe it's just that my filters are way down, but... yeah. Time of day = such a huge difference.
I'm so glad you posted this, because your neurosis is my neurosis. *g* Really, that's exactly the way that I often feel. It's a good thing that LJ makes it so easy to just click the reply button and type something quick, because otherwise I probably wouldn't say anything to most of the people whose fic I enjoyed.
*nods* Ys, the comment button is a very useful thing! And I think sharing neuroses is good, because you feel less ridiculous if you know you're not alone.
Um. This is kind of a drive by commenting, but I feel your pain. I mean, yes. That. Exactly that. I feedback to make authors happy, and I always feel kind of lame leaving generic 'this was good' feedback -- it never feels like I'm making enough effort in return for the fic (and how many times have I gone "I must think of something better than that to say. I will leave it until I have worked out something better to say." and then left nothing? Argh, self. Argh. *headdesk*) -- but whenever I leave long feedback I fear the "Oh god, you misread the story in precisely the way I feared it would be misread, and I didn't answer because I was too busy sobbing into a pillow" reaction so badly. And I'm feeling kind of bad for being so glad I'm not the only one with this neurosis (it sucks! Things sucking for other people is not a good thing!), but seriously, I'm not all on my own! *feels so much better about it*

Dude, this is precisely why I made this post. Neuroses shared is neuroses halved, or something. We are not alone!
(and I never mind drive-by commenting, so no worries.)
