this is the official irc channel on irc.indymedia.org that is being ported everywhere as the organizing irc space, there is the main the official channel, and they have several offshoot channels for other kinds of things (for the various localized ones, a politics channel, etc). all protests have an official irc channel on indymedia. its standard. and even protests who are "leaderless and orgless" have them. ive worked in protests for over 20yr now, particularly leaderless orgged protests. not only are there ALWAYS leaders, there are always the same kinds of infrastructure to put the protests together. they are also using out same txt blast stuff (that i wrote mind you), the same from the street webstreaming infrastructure, and i know several of the people running comms and ops for the wall st specific stuff are the same people who usually run comms and ops for those kinds of protests. this is the big myth about occupy*, it actually does have very clear leaders, they are just anonymous to most outsiders. it is your standard black bloc "its not a group, its a *movement*" bullshit that they have been spinning for the last 35yr. the problem is this protest is reaching a lot of people who havent worked in social organizing, and who are pretty naive about the party line. just because someone says there are no leaders, doesn't mean there arent. just because a group says it has no structure, doesnt mean that it doesnt. when i watch the footage on the wall street kids, its the same kids ive known from the nyc protest scene since the rnc. oh look, its jimmi from nyc resistor up there with the bullhorn, oh look, its samiya from nyc indymedia talking with reporters as the "non official press person", yet its always the same person, and it's funny how she is an official press person for several other orgs! etc etc. don't believe the hype that this all just coalesced out of nowhere and it's a bunch of kids that have never protested or done anything like this. it's 100% the same as the black bloc philosophy. and the fact that they are using tricks like the fake radiohead concert to swell numbers is yet another common play out of those guys playbook. those tactics go back to the first gulf war protests when people said that green day was going to play a secret show in the embarcadero to support the protestors and several thousand extra people showed up. people wonder why i don't support this movement, and it's because im not stupid enough to believe the bullshit they are spouting. when this shit disappears in 3months without having done anything, i don't want to have wasted my time on the same anarchist bullshit i've had to deal with for years.
ahhh. see, i def didnt know it was related to indymedia.
while i do think theres some neat stuff going on right now, i def feel the same way you do about this as some sort of new or different thing. and i am def never down with protests, honestly.
