for what i envision for my future.
no worries- what's up eastern shore?
but i love gardening. i almost love the weeding which i have spent the day doing. thank the gods that we got rain and all the plants are all lush and green. i love that it is one step closer to becoming less dependent on external forces. i have picked up a book on homesteading from a family that produces over 60,000 pounds of food on 1/4 of an acre of land. and now i have great plans for our backyard. but first i need to get through this growing season. i have taken the first step and that is to have a garden. next i need to turn every sunny place into an area for plants. working at the farmer's market is allowing me to learn a lot of important things about how to grow plants and what to do with your soil. already i have learned a trick to planting tomato plants- you plant them all the way up the stem until just a little bit of the top is showing. and that i need to plant buckwheat in the winter and that it will loosen the soil way down deep. it is great. i can't get enough of it. next year i will be getting a few chickens probably just for their eggs, but maybe to eat?
but so far in the garden we have and what is super cool is most of this was grown from our own seeds that we had harvested last year: peas, spinach, carrots, radishes, lettuce (butter crunch, yum, fucking, yum and romaine), mustard greens, leeks, spring onions, potatoes, regular onions, brussel sprouts, swiss chard, basil, thai basil, blue african basil, yellow pepper, green pepper, red pepper, thai pepper, jalapenos, dill, fennel, thyme, cilantro, oregano (italian and greek), chives, heirloom tomatoes (four plants), regular tomatoes for canning (three plants), beets, watermelon, zucchini, green beans, eggplant, cantaloupe (although it is not doing too well), red cabbage, green cabbage, and some errant cucumber plants that just sprang up out of nowhere...i am sad that we don't have broccoli this year. oh yeah and strawberries and asparagus. but we are going to have to renew our strawberry plants next year since ours have gotten old and worn out. and i want to plant more asparagus this fall because we aren't getting enough from the plants we have now.
waiting to be put in is: more beets, cucumbers, more beans, lima beans, some more cantaloupe and zucchini and more radishes....but these are going to have to wait until some of the spring veggies come out.
and then in the middle of august we get to plant all the spring veggies again! and we are going to try to grow some winter stuff this year too like carrots and turnips. i would like to have to buy as little as possible from the supermarket. i have a hard enough time buying stuff from there as it is. it grosses me out and makes me sad, but i feel blessed that we can go to the supermarket and get what we need. right now i want to take advantage of the land that i have and try to live off of it because you never know when all of that could change.
and the baby bird that scott so kindly fed squashed up worms to has flown the coop. i am glad that i got pictures when i could. that thing grew so quickly. in under two weeks he had feathers and was out of the nest.
