Brief summary: Ever wonder what would have happened if Nsync had made it big in the 1960s? Or in the 1970s? Written as two encyclopedia articles, with pieces of narratives as footnotes, this story gives its own intriguing answer.

Excerpt: In 1965, Chris Kirkpatrick, attending college thanks to the GI Bill and 4 years served in Germany and Vietnam, discovered three important things in the course of one week: a place to get weed in the States, a burgeoning folk scene near his apartment and a precocious fourteen year old Justin Timberlake. Timberlake's mother and stepfather ran the coffeehouse/bar that was the epicenter of the small scene and 'he just followed me out the door one night,' Kirkpatrick recalled to Rolling Stone in 1971. 'He was asking me about where I went to school, if I knew the guys who'd performed and then he said he could beat me up. I said, 'kid, I was in the Army, don't even think about it.' But he said he could outrun me, and he was probably right.' Kirkpatrick started to sing a Dylan song the band that night had covered and Timberlake chimed in. 'As annoying as the kid was, we sounded great together.'

A month later, Kirkpatrick suggested to Timberlake that they form a band to play at the coffeehouse. Timberlake suggested a friend of his, JC Chasez, with whom he'd been in a children's choir. Chasez brought along a friend, Joey Fatone and the core of *NSYNC had been formed. With Fatone on drums, and the other three alternating on guitar depending on the song, initially the band had a friend of Fatone's from high school, Jason Watkins, playing bass.

The band began gigging around town, not just at the coffeehouse but opening for touring regional acts. Even its earliest form, the band boasted tight vocal harmonies like the Mamas and Papas and an energetic stage show. They primarily covered blues and folk songs. By late 1966, the band had begun to attract interest from labels, but the other four had decided Watkins had to go. 'He didn't like Revolver, man, and that was the end,' Chasez told Rolling Stone.

Prompt: 27 Beginnings
Title: Childish
Author: Giddy, at The Geekdom and giddygeek
Rating: -
Length: medium
Brief summary: It's the atmosphere and the interactions between the guys that make this story what it is, not the plot which mostly consist of Justin feeling lonely and inviting the other guys to a barbeque. The strangely surreal but sunny atmosphere gives room for both hilarity and seriousness in the interactions between Lance and Chris, and for Justin's budding interest in JC. This may not be Giddy's best story but it's a compelling read and one I find myself returning to.

Excerpt: In the bushes, Chris was screeching something about being crushed like a bug under the weight of Justin's huge-ass feet or being felled with one blow of his freakishly long arms. Lance, laughing now, finally crossed the patio and made his careful way into the leaves. His white shirt was the only sign of him, just a little flicker of sun-reflection in the deep green and pale wood and occassional colorful blossom.

Justin shook his head and turned away, watching the pink hoop float forlornly in the pool, a bright disruption to the dank greenness of the water. While he was watching, bubbles formed in the water around the hoop. His eyes widened and he stared as it spun a few times, working up waves, and began to sink. In a few seconds, all traces of it were gone.

'Wow,' Justin thought. 'I should really get the pool cleaned. With, um, explosives.' And then he shook his head, took a deep breath, and pretended that nothing weird was happening. JC and Joey were singing something while they toiled over the grill, and that was good, great, he'd never been able to resist a sing-along.

Plus, he was, uh, pretty sure he could get JC to try out the hula hoops.
