So, random thoughts on Edinburgh then.
- One moment that really stuck out for me was when Mr Birling assumes Douglas is the captain. Usually those sort of moments are all about how annoyed Martin gets and Douglas teasing him and laughing. This time we see Douglas being embarrassed by it. Much as he tries to pretend that he doesn’t care that he’s not the captain, it obviously bothers him more than he lets on. It’s nice to get a glimpse of a more vulnerable side to Douglas.
- And I should say here how much I love Mr Birling as a character. He’s loud and awful and I should hate him for how horrible he is but I can’t. He makes me laugh so much and I’m so glad we got to see more for him.
- The Talisker. Oh, I love it. The way Carolyn insists that it’s theft rather than a game and yet she still allows it to go on. She must be getting something out of it, even if it’s just the mere chance that she might get one over on Douglas by stopping him.
- You’re twenty eight, you have a ridiculous job and you still live with your mother. Poor Arthur. He’s like a kicked puppy when he’s upset. It’s so wrong. Carolyn cheering him up over the phone is one of my favourite parts of the episode. And I love that he apparently has a string of girlfriends, all with silly names. I can just imagine it.
- That moment when Martin finds out how big the tips really are. The shock in his voice. Of course it all makes sense now. It makes you wonder how much of the backstories for the characters was already planned out at this stage.
- How did I never notice that Mr Birling calls him Marty towards the end? I mean, he calls Douglas “Dougie” all the way through so I should have expected it but I didn’t even notice.
- Oh Douglas, you are a sneaky bastard, with your nail varnish and everything. Shame it didn’t get you anywhere in the end.
So, yes, Edinburgh. Good. More please. (Can you tell that I have no clue how to end this? I am so bad at writing these things.)
Anyway, Fitton next. It turns out I have a lot to say about that one. I may be some time.
