has anyone actually read the books?

Just read the Radio Times review of Sherlock.

"Some viewers will recoil from the very idea of BBC1 updating Conan Doyle's characters to modern London, with texting (lots of texting) and police tape and GPS and a Dr Watson who fought in Afghanistan. But the good news is, it works. What could have been the defiling of a sacred text comes off superbly. Benedict Cumberbatch makes a disturbing, edgy Holmes, one who likes to whip corpses and keep human eyes in his microwave..."

First chapter of A Study in Scarlet! Read it! I could let the beating corpses one pass but Afghanistan?! It's the first thing that happens in the book!

Why is everything people "know" about Sherlock Holmes wrong? No, he's not an opium addict! And no, Watson's not a total idiot! Just after the film came out last year, I got a lecture from my sister about how wrong it was for Holmes to be boxing! The only Holmes-related thing she's ever seen is The Great Mouse Detective but suddenly she's an expert!

I know I really shouldn't care about this but it winds me up so much! Do some research, people!

[Edited now that I've calmed down: the Radio Times isn't complete fail. It has a very nice article by Steven Moffat about the show and what got him interested in Sherlock Holmes. Really got me excited for it.]

rage!!!, sherlock holmes, sherlock
