A Letter to J. Michael Straczynski
Dear JMS,
FUCK YOU.
That’s it. I’m done. Seriously, you guys, I’m done. I stuck with it as long as I could. I gave it a chance and the benefit of the doubt. I’ve reached my end. I’m talking about “All New” Wonder Woman. No. No, sir. This is not all new nor is it Wonder Woman. The writing has turned Diana into a parody of herself. First there’s the uniform change. Which I have always felt was unnecessary. She’s a super hero, folks. Legs, ass and boobs are sort of expected. All comics are, essentially, marketed towards 13-24 yr old boys. The new uniform is fine. I actually like it. It’s functional and sort of bad ass. The uniform is the least of it, though. That’s doable. It’s the characterization. They had a scene where Diana disobeys her guardians and sneaks out and listens to her ipod and is just generally a teenager. Um…isn’t this why there’s a WONDER GIRL? Cassie is actually in the TEEN TITANS. Did Diana need to regress that far? No. Now I’m not saying it’s been all bad but the bad certainly outweighs the good. JMS decided to reboot Diana by basically making her the opposite of what she is. She’s an Amazon Princess - a diplomat and a warrior, a daughter and a sister, a woman who has one foot in Themyscara and the other in the Patriarch’s World. JMS’s Diana is none of that. She wasn’t raised in Themyscara and while she is being raised as an Amazon warrior and leader she is no where near DIANA. Furthermore the Amazons have become her caretakers, not her equals. They worship Diana as the second coming, and not just their beloved princess. Oh and she’s an orphan, yeah. All that beautiful mother-daughter growth and interaction that Simone penned…GONE! Her entire supporting cast is gone. No Ferdinand, no Steve Trevor or Etta Candy, no albino apes, oh and Artemis? Don’t get me started, folks. She’s the villain now? No. No. No sir, fuck you, JMS. He nerfed Giganta and Cheetah to the point of near unrecognizable shadows of their former selves. Then, this is when I put the book down, stood up and walked to the counter and told the clerk to take Wonder Woman off my pulls, Dr Psycho is the good guy? No. This isn’t original or even particularly entertaining. I’ve read the first two trades of Batman and Robin and KNOW I enjoy that series so that’s what I replaced it with. I’ve been reading Wonder Woman since OYL, every single issue EVEN AMAZONS ATTACK but I can no longer read this abomination.
