75,000 ... this month? I'm hoping for 20,000.

I wrote 63,000 in November, so I am trying to push myself as I have just over 38K so far. I think I can get anotther 37k in if I tried. (At least another 30K) I'm just over 100K in my novel.

I've never written 100k novel at all -- I think my longest manuscript so far was just over 70,000 words, and I ended up cutting some of that. Strange, considering I can be so long winded in person!

That is really weird as I heard most publisher will not accept manuscript any shorter than 80,000 words. I also heard that average novel is between 80,000 and 120,000 words. My first NaNoWriMo novel was 132,000 words when I got my proof copy. I hope to finish the next novel by the end of Feb. and edit both novels in March. (It just depends on how these migraines and teeth problems allow me to do so.)

Generally speaking when it comes to novels, the shorter the better, but it depends on the genre; SF and fantasy tends to be longer than, say, romance. However, many publishers don't like manuscripts longer than 100,000, especially from new writers -- the theory is that the average reader has less time to read these days. Just the same, a really good story will attract them no matter what the length.

Ever since I have been doing NaNoWriMo I keep getting articles stating that 80-120K is an average novel. However with people's short attention span these days, I can understand where shorter novels make scents.
It's hard for me to cut my story when my characters keep prolonging it. Do you argue with your characters?

Oh, I argue with my characters at first ... then I smarten up and let them do what they want, at least until it's time to revise.

I have been doing that myself. The red pen means they need to shut up.
