I still miss having my cat here, waiting attentively while I finish eating some ice cream, ready to lick out the bowl. Eating ice cream without her in this empty house just isn't the same.

When I was living by myself in Lincoln, NE, I would come home from a long day of work and there was Emma, waiting for me. At the time I didn't have the energy to do much in the evenings besides sit in a chair and read a book or browse the web. I lost track of how many little habits were built around the presence of the cat, like: don't leave papers at the edges of tables so there's enough room for the cat to jump on the tables. Same for leaving things on the footstool/box thing she liked to perch on and that served as a step up to the side table in the dining room. Then there's her ( Read more... )

I am glad that I was able to take her to the vet who has seen her for the past 1.5 years. They were very kind to her and to me today. I'm going to be a wreck for a while but it is a relief that she is at peace.

I cannot express how incredibly grateful I am that Emma's vet is open today and that they were able to fit her in for an emergency appointment at 4:30. Don't expect good things to come from this except perhaps an end to suffering.

She stopped eating again on Tuesday, and is having a hard time navigating any kind of height (falling off of beds). So her heated bed is now at floor level, along with other basics (food, water, litterbox). I'm grateful for the last 2 weeks with her but I don't think she has much time left now.

One other hypothesis I haven't mentioned yet is that this most recent bout of lethargy could have to do with Emma having yet another urinary tract infection. When S took her in to see the emergency vet on Saturday, they shot her full of fluids and an antibiotic, just in case.

She hasn't been eating very much over the last week. If we urge her to eat, she will try and take a few bites, but it still isn't enough.

I mostly mention this so if this is indeed near the end for her, it is less of a shock. She is 17 years old, after all. I'd love for her to live longer, but we also have to be realistic.
